ADHD Meds...? |
My son is w/o doubt ADHD. I have also noticed he has anxiety attacks. He is 7 years old and since he has started school they have been trying to get me to put him on medication. I have always believed it was wrong but he has failed K and is not on level in 1st. I am afraid my beliefs on the issue are holding him back. He is very forgetfull and fidgity and when we do his homework he gets so frustrated and after about 15 minutes I am unable to get him to process anything, he will forget things that I make him repeat over and over seconds later. I know professional medical advice is necessary but I am curious of any experiences that can be shared. Home schooling is not an option, I work full-time, besides that I am not in the teaching field for a good reason. I struggled with that as well. My son was really experiencing difficulties and I fought against medication, but after I finally realized that if he had something like diabetes, I would give him medication for that...it became much clearer. When he started taking medication, he was happier and his grades shot through the roof! He was able to concentrate and feel more "normal". I know what a struggle it is to try and decide what is best for your child. I would go to a specialist and go over your options. I hope this helps a little. I felt the same way, we put our 8 yr old on meds for it and he's getting straight A's and can sit and do homework. He's still the same kid. I'm glad we did it so he didn't fall further and further behind, especially in reading. It would be night and day difference. My advice to you is NOT put him on any meds. Take him out of public school and home school him. The one on one interaction with him will quickly take away what appears to be ADHD. Children need their parents more than their parents have time for them. They are with other people more than their own parents. It is so sad. So many children are medicated...why????? It's horrible!!!!! Children need time with mommy and daddy not meds! ADHD is now a common diagnosis. The drug companies like to sell their drugs. Aderell, Ritlin etc. Lady, im in med school right now and i hope you will hold my opinion seriously. There is an experiment you should do- give him coffee in the morning and see how he reacts to it.. if he calms down then there is what you need to target. If you are hell bent on no medication and the coffee experiment worked, try nutrilite's brainiums. It is on quixtar.com and i have a discount card if you would like to use it. It had DHA which will help him concentrate and with memory. I have seen this work before. If the experiment does not work, then he will need medication i am sorry to say. The anxiety attacks are not good and clinically he needs to be helped with it. I hope this helps and everything works out for you :) Im the exact same..now a sophmore in HS. I also had to stay back in Kinder. Tryed meds am involved in sports but had to kkepp gettin pulled out because I could not breath right because of the meds. and the other med i tryed I was a zombi literally. Try behavioral therepy thats what I do along with speech pathology. Learinng is soooo hard for me. what I did with my mom even though I get sooo frustrated and always end up fighting but still try sitting down for one problem then actally getting up and getting water. and repeat. Hope this helps. Oh and I would also get checked out for an LD. Sounds alot like what ive been going through. |
