Can any tell me how to get the docters to listen to you when you try to tell them your son has ADHD?

my son is 10 and the school also thinks this but the docter we seen did not under stand that he get up 5 and will not sleep till 10 at night he hits me and awsers back i have been on parenting courses to try and help but nothing works

I would assume that since they're the doctors, they'd know better than we would, and if the doctors don't think he has ADHD, then he probably doesn't. They're the ones with PhD's, not you or us.

I have a 14 year old daughter and I was convinced ADHD was an excuse for bad behaviour, hence her being a late diagnosis. If your child has ADHD believe me the doctor would know,or at least he would refer you to someone(psychiatrist).
The only reason I believe it now ,is the remarkable difference in my child since she started medication, albeit a low dose.My doctor knew in 15 minutes of talking to my child that she had this condition,it took a further 7 months to get it confirmed and a further 3 months of soul searching as to whether or not to allow her medication. It's not something you really want to force on your child, but if you truly believe this is what your child has,ask to be referred to a child psychiatrist.

How old is your son? If he is too young they won't screen for it. If he is school age - there are sheets you can have teachers fill out about observations they make for the doctor to consider when making a diagnosis.

Who is the doctor. You or them?
Just come to terms with the fact you have raised a brat?

Hmm are you a fully qualified clinical psychologist?
If not I suggest you enrol him in an athletics club plus take him to the park every day to play
Most of his ADhd will disappear
incidentally can he sit and watch a favourite tv programme with not problem
if so he is not adhd
too many energetic kids are mislabelled by their own parents who cannot be bothered to channel their liveliness

Is he at school? Ask for an ed-psych referral/report if so.

Try this questionnaire - it's the same that teachers get aske dot fill in. Then take that along to the doctors. http://www.hyperactivekids.com/sections/...

If he was diagnosed with it..why do you have to tell the doctors?? A parent cannot diagnose ADHD.

video tape your son around the house and then bring it to the doctors...

Your best bet is to have school teachers & guidance councelors at school evaluate him. Take his report card also to the doctors office with you if he is doing poorly in school. If your child is under school age, give him some time to see if he outgrows it. If not, then have family and friends write notes to your doctor explaining what behavior they are seeing. There could be other underlying reasons why your child acts as if he has ADHD. Look into allergies, seretonan imbalance (This is done by a psycologist), lack of attention paid to him, and depression which leads to aggression. Sometimes we are to quick to place kids on medicine to calm them down. My son had ADHD and was on medication for several years. He eventually outgrew it and now is on no medication. It took teachers at school and guidance counselors help to get him properly diagnosed.

Maybe the doctor's know better than you..maybe he just has behavior issues caused by a poor home....look at you and your surroundings...no every child has ADHD, so let's medicate him so he too can be a zombie!!!

My sister is in the same position as you. My nephew is 12 now and she has been tryin to get the doc's to test him for ADHD for a few years now, he behaves the exact same way he hits her on a daily basis too. The doctors are alway's shrugging her off telling her he is "way to intelligent" to have ADHD. I think it's a disgrace that they are not willing to listen to a parent when they know that there is something wrong with there child.

Hi Heidi i feel for you we where in same situation as you, In my op-pinion i think you should approach the school and ask them to write a letter telling there concerns due to your child so that you can bring to your doctor so you have some backup on your fears he/she cant knock back what the teachers think, the more support you have on your findings more the chance you will get referral and get help. Remember parent knows best, don't let anyone tell you different.Good luck.

Heidi R -

As a mental health professional, I can tell you that while Dr.'s are trained and have advanced degrees, they are still human. If you don't like the answers you are getting - get a second opinion.

If you are certain it is ADHD, I would suggest you speak with someone who specifically deals with ADHD for a living. But, you also have to be careful that they conduct a thorough evaluation and do not just hand you medications or a diagnosis without a complete evaluation.

When I work with children and their parents, I view things a certain way:

1. Parent is the expert on their child
2. Be your child's advocate (just like you are doing here)
3. Get information (as much as you can)
4. Find other people who are supportive (and not blaming or shaming).

Hope this helps.

PS - If you are in the US, ask your son's school to conduct an evaluation. Put your request in writing and be sure to follow up.

i knew there was something not right with my son, doctors insisted he was fine (turns out hes autistic), to get them to listen and take me seriously, one day when i was having a really bad day with him i walked into the doctors surgery and said 'you either do something about my son or when i leave he doesnt come with me', obviously i wouldnt have left him but it was enough to get me the refferal that i needed. you have your son 24/7, they make judgement in 5mins. if your gut is telling you something is wrong, you may well be right

As a parent you know your child better than anyone else. I would try to give the doctor an honest picture of your son's day, it will be hard but if you write down everything that he does, in as much detail as possible, to show him so you can say 'look this is what life is like'. maybe he will listen to you then and refer you to a specialist.
Hope this is helpful.
Good luck

in a word IMPOSSIBLE.

my brother was diagnosed with other problems before he was officially diagnosed with ADHD at about 11.

he had been expelled at about the age of 4 and then was taken out of mainstream school due to behavioural problems at 5. he would hit and shout at anyone who challenged him.

even using weapons to hit people. seem to be constantly angry.

he is now 15 and has calmed down extremly but was on rittilin for about a year when he was 1st diagnosed.

my mum, had to give up her job becayse she was constanlt being phoned to come and pick him up. everyone gave up on him.

so when he was diagnosed it was a releif for my mum as she could now look at those who gave up on him and tell them it wasnt bad parenting.

im afraid you'l have to just grit your teeth and wait for the docs to actually diagnose him or him himself calm down.

Hi ....i have a son with autism and from what you describe it doesn't sound like ADHD to me it sounds like bad behaviour if the doctor has checked him out and at aged 10 he is old enough then he would have diagnosed him, they cannot just diagnose a child with a few factors you have told us ADHD is a lot more than what you have said
