ADHD help.....?

I want to find out some information about ADHD, i want to know what type of therapy is best for ADHD. Please only put therapies for answers, no pills, or alternate solutions. Looking specifically for types of therapies for children with ADHD. Thank you

Whether you choose medication or not is up to you and only you. You know mostly the nature of the ADHD traits that are effecting your child and how severe they are. There are several books out there in the self help section on non-medication treatments for ADHD and depending on what is going on inside you childs head and what goes on around him or her (social network, family life, etc.).

-Medication
-Diet
-Therapy
-Coaching
-Routine
-Exercise
-Vitamins
-Neurofeedback
-ADHD Learning environment (public schooling is geared for non-ADHD kids)

As you approach some of these know that there are three levels of issues that someone with ADHD has to deal with. The first is the primary effect, can't sit still, impulsiveness, poor memory, no-control of attenion. The second is the internal effect that those have on things like "learning" and "responsibility." The third ring is the effect the two inner rings have on the outer ring: social problems. For example, if the child is impulsive then they feel like they have to have that toy now but feels bad because they know its wrong but is still driven to take it away from a friend who gets mad and doesn't want to play with the child anymore. Extreme, I know but keep everything inside and outside in mind.

I think you are on the right path. Work the problem but see the whole problem.

Did I even answer your question? I don't know why I wrote all that.

There are no real therapies for classic ADHD to my knowledge. Classic ADHD is a little like the many neurological epilepsies, Tourette's, Parkinson's, and other known neurological challenges. If one tosses out the pills for the ADHDs, epilepsies, etc., one tosses out many of the known answers/partial answers. Sorry if my view offends some readers. Good luck.

A couple of thoughts come to mind:

1. Traditional psychotherapy (aka talk therapy or play therapy)

While medication can help relieve symptoms, therapy can help provide for exploration of behavior and find the right strategies for success.

For behavioral problems - you might be more interested in finding a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist. The focus of this work is on understanding behavior and assisting in making behavioral changes.

2. Coaching

ADHD coaching specifically focuses on helping individuals with ADHD better manage their symptoms - understand the condition - and finding ways to implement strategies for success in school, organization, work, etc...

3. Check out DORE USA - They might be expensive, but the concept is what is important. They offer Drug-Free treatment for children with ADHD.

From their website:

"The Dore Program has been designed to maximize your child鈥檚 learning potential by developing the brain with fun exercises that can be done at home.

It works especially well with children who show symptoms of ADD, AD/HD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and Aspergers Syndrome.

The Program is drug-free and non invasive and has lasting results."

Hope this is what you are looking for. Please contact me if you have other questions.
