ADHD diet...?


What foods should a child with ADHD stay away from and eat more of?

avoid sugar (dextrose, sucrose, corn syrump, maltodextrin)! Fructose in fruit and lactose in milk is fine. Also yellow and red food coloring/dyes should be avoided; read hte labels. Caffeine actually works opposite on the ADHD person, so it can calm them down a bit.

Just married -

Everything in moderation. Diet does not cause ADHD - it can just make the symptoms seem worse (like many other things that can make them appear worse). If your child is already hyperactive, then you would want him or her to be careful of how much sugar he or she eats.

Be careful of the myths and conspiracies surrounding ADHD. There are a lot of them.

As for what foods to eat - protein for breakfast. You want your child to start the day with the proper energy source (like eggs), and not sugar (which would cause a crash in energy).

I would highly recommend checking out a book called "Parenting Children With ADHD" by Vincent Monastra.
