Is There Any Other Treatment Methods For a Child that has ADHD??

WE WERE TOLD THAT OUR 7 YEAR OLD HAD A BEHAVIOR PROBLEM,
WELL THE DOCTOR PRESCRIBED FOR HIM TO TAKE STRATERA, WELL WE STARTED DOING RESEARCH ON THE MEDICINE TO FIND OUT WHAT IT WAS REALLY FOR.
RESULTS FOUND THAT IT TREATS ADHD.
"ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERTENTION DISORDER."
WE NOT SURE OF WHAT ALL WE CAN DO TO HELP HIM
WITH BEING ABLE TO DEAL WITH THIS.
ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED...

Hi Rose, another form of treatment used is ADHD vitamins and ADHD diet. Both are non-drug approach. You can read about it here: =>

It depends on if you believe there is a such thing as a BEHAVIOR DISORDER, or a "chemical imbalance in the brain". I mean it could be a disorder, but it always seemed like ADHD was more of a problem to me.
It all depends on one person's belief. If it is not true in your eyes and you can discipline your child to behave, then perhaps it can stop being a problem.
You could give him to medicine if you believe ADHD really is effecting the child
You also have to take into consideration that this child is 7 years old. Usually kids do have behavior problems.

*****This is JUST a suggestion/opinion. I am NOT looking to start anything. I always know that it could be wrong*****

ADHD should only be diagnosed by a qualified professional psychologist or psychiatrist. They ask alot of questions of parents, teachers, and family members, talk to and observe the child, and might even order MRI or CAT scan to check on brain activity. A physician shouldn't prescribe behavioral medication without this diagnosis and without the psychologist or psychiatrist officially diagnosing the problem. There are alot of other things that need to be done for ADHD kids (and adults) than just be given medication.

We took our son off medication after seeing some disturbing results (though this was a long time ago when Ritalin was the only choice). We opted instead for being very involved in teaching him self-management--organization, anger control, communication, and much more. He is 16 now and even polices his own diet, eating much healthier than most adults I know. He needed to be taught ways to stay organized and get focused; he needed safe and healthy outlets for all the energy and frustration (and even anger), and he needed to understand that the diagnosis of ADHD wasn't a punishment nor was it an excuse to get out of trouble. (He blamed ADHD on alot of things after being diagnosed, "I can't help it; I'm ADHD." We didn't let him use that and didn't buy into it ourselves. It has been work all these years, though looking back now, I feel very worth all the work. His sense of self-esteem is good and he's a bright, motivated and very active kid who so can't stand to have nothing to do that getting him to do his chores, homework, play with the toddler, go to work, etc. is no problem.

Did the doctor tell you that he has ADHD specifically? If so, this is the best medication for him to take. I have had ADD all my life and have tried many different kinds. Stratera is the safest, being the only kind that is a non- stimulent. Keep track of if this is helping your child or not. I know that my grades sky rocketed when I started taking it. My parents and I were thrilled.

A side- effect that I had and you should watch out for is dramatic weight loss. I lost about 30 pounds because it gave me a loss of appetite. I was in need of some pound shedding, but surely a 7 year old is not. If the medicine isn't helping ask your doctor for other options.

no more red dye. diet, and lots of excercise and love.
