Does ADHD medecin really help?

Does anyone have any knowledge or past experiences with ADHD medicine and know if it help students focus

My daughter has ADHD, ODD and Dyslexia, and was on Ritalin for the ADHD. Within days of starting the medication we noticed the difference in her, we could sit her down and talk to her, she would wait before speaking (my pet hate was her butting into conversations with out saying excuse me), we could also rationalize with her etc.

When I spoke to her class teacher about how she was going they said she (my daughter) seemed to be more focused, less fidgety and less distracted.

A month of her being on the medication her paediatrician asked her if she noticed any difference, in my daughter words "I can think clearly, and all the noise in my head has gone, and I can do my work more easily" not bad for a 9 year old to articulate this to her doctor, needless to say I was incredulous at her reply.

So yes ADHD medication does work, but something that her paediatrician said has always stuck in my mind, "that if she truly has ADHD then the medication dose according to her weight and hight should work, anyone needing more than the recommended dose is not ADHD".

I also worked with a ADHD boy and found that if his parents had forgotten to give him his morning medication, he was very easily distracted, could not stop talking or moving, could be very naughty, leading to my running non stop the whole time he was with me. I learnt very quickly to ask if he had his medication, that morning.

Yes they do. The trick is to find one that works for you. There are several different drugs on the market, but their effects vary from person to person.

I'm 39 years old, and was recently diagnosed with ADD. I've had it my entire life, but it was only recently that it was confirmed. I'm taking meds for it now, and the results have been dramatic.

I haven't tried Adderall, but I've been on Focalin which is a similar drug, basically Amphetamine. It allows me to concentrate, especially when studying (I'm in college fulltime) or doing homework. Focalin is also a lot milder than Adderall and is not habit forming like Adderall. I'm currently taking 5 mg, twice daily, but only on days that I am studying. There is also an extended release version of Focalin which lasts 12 hours, but it is quite expensive by comparison to the non-extended release Focalin, which only lasts 6 hours.

On big side effect, which for me is pretty good, is that you will lose weight. It kills your appetite and for me, I have to remember to eat. It also raises your metabolism, further reducing your weight.

I was on Straterra very briefly, but was taken off of it when I began having upsettingly gruesome nightmares. Focalin works great for me, and does bit affect my mood like Straterra. Do yourself a favor and talk to a shrink. Once you find the drug which works on you, you will be amazed at the changes.

adderall turns me into a robot, i hate taking it but it does help me do work. Adderall also makes me lose my appetite, i wont eat for 2+ days if i take it everyday, ill just drink water, and sometimes it makes me really irritable.

ive also taken strattera but that made me sleep all the time so i stoped taking it, and i also tried concerta and that gave me really bad stomach aches.

imo all the side effects outweigh the advantages, at least for me

If the diagnosis of ADHD is correct then medication can be very helpful. Sometimes it takes a little while to figure out the right dosage and medication for the individual but once that is explored and the meds adjusted then improvement in focus can be pretty immediate.

i was adderall and i had to stop taking it , it made me bipolar and im not kidding! my son is on focalin(5mg) his grades in school all improved from one semester to the next. I had a really hard time making the decision to put my son on the medicine, but in the end i know i made the right choice.

If the medical condition is properly diagnosed, then meds do help. But for those who prefer to go the non-meds way, there are vitamins and diet which have proven to work many a time. You can visit this site for more info on ADHD vitamins and diet:

I think it should be a combination of efforts -- medication and teaching the person learning habits. There are therapy tools that can also help the person focus and these should be used in conjunction with medication.

i have a son withADHDand he takes concerta and does pretty good on it he just dont like to eat to much on it

defentily but it might take up to two weeks to take affect
