There are no surefire way to check ADHD. However, a doctor who is trained in ADHD will be able to tell with much accuracy. On your own, you can compare his symptoms with the established ones. You can look up ADHD symptoms here =>

By the way, if you plan to take him to a doctor, make very sure that the doctor is trained in the area in which you want son checked. For example, if you want check if he has ADHD, make sure the doctor is well trained to handle that task. Most doctors don't know much about this disorder.

This is a child with no manners. Take away his privileges if he doesn't act properly. Not brushing his teeth at 12 years old shows some serious neglect. Get him in order! He has no psychological problems.

He would take after his parents also.. so set a good example. Like spelling 'spoilt' correctly.

could it be he's acting out b/c his parents split? kids don't expres themselves as well verbally as adults do. So he's acting out his feelings instead maybe

you need to give him a good spanking that's what you should do OTK bare butt

Eheh. I'm 14. I very rarely do chores. I am reasonably spoilt. I don't do homework. Playing comes first every time. I am the king of procrastination. Unfortunatly, I'm in the top 1% in my district marks wise, and the best at all academic subjects in my year, so we're entirely different :P.
Google for a website called Tickle, and take the classic IQ test there for him. It's rather lengthy, he may need encouraging. Admittedly, the age range starts at 15-16, but it makes less of a difference for younger people than older. It doesn't affect what questions you are given, so it shouldn't matter.
Unfortunatly, in my experiance (I have to put up with these people on a daily basis >.>) changing these people's minds is generally very hard, as few of them will actually care about what marks they get and punishments they may receive. They've given up on their own abilities in a culture that seems to promote stupidity (I dread what life will be like when me and these people are old enough to work. The world is doomed :D). They can lose break, or lunch, or spend a bit of time after school. None of these are that significant to them.
Oh, and as for disrespect:
If you have a son, and you spell and employ grammar worse than me, you have failed at life xD

this sounds a lot like my 12 year old brother. he doesn't do many of the same chores my sister and i did because he had ADD and he could not focus enough to do what he was told. believe me, it's a struggle keeping his grades up.you need to speak with your husband about parenting methods and you need to take him to the doctor and get him tested. the doctor will be able to prescribe some medicine that will help greatly. my brothers grades improved with the help of medicine and support from his family. if he is having trouble getting the assignments, tell him if he doesn't write them down and do them, he can't watch t.v. you could also ask his teacher to make sure he is writing everything down and getting it turned in. it will take a while but don't give up! :)

Americans are so quick to diagnose normal (though irritating) behavior as a disorder

Don't throw the fault onto him and be too quick to diagnose him with something imaginary when the bulk of the responsibility lies with you and your former spouse

The over-diagnosing of children in the USA with imaginary 'disorders' and then the fact they get prescribed with strong psychotropic drugs is, frankly, disgusting.

Other countries look at America and can hardly believe what is going on.
