You are NOT alone. As an ADHD coach and former therapist, medication is the single most topic I hear questions about.

Do you have to take medication to treat ADHD? No

Is there a different way? Yes

To be perfectly honest, many medical organizations and government organizations specializing in research and offering recommendations suggest that the most effective treatment for ADHD is a combination of medication and psychotherapy or "talk-therapy."

That being said, there are many people who can successfully manage ADHD without medication.

It's not unheard of - but it is something that you need to PLAN carefully and be certain to have a great number of resources in your life for support (i.e., teacher, mentor, therapist, family, friend, etc...).

You don't want to do this alone.

Of course I would recommend you speak with a psychiatrist - but that might take some time. You will really have to look for a psychiatrist who will support you on your decision not to take medications. I know they are out there.

I applaud you for wanting to take control of your ADHD. There are a great number of ways to do this without medication.

Dr. Stern (call me Rory)

PS - Here are a couple of resources you can check out:

Tell your doc that you dont want to take them (they cant make you) and you would like to look into alternative ways to manage your ADHD.

If taking the tablets is a dilema for you then that cant be helping your symptoms and happyness anyway so with the help of a doc or therapist or naturopath (careful you find a fully qualified one) you will be better off finding another path the managing your diaognosis.

There is plenty on info on youtube about it, the pros and cons etc - dont take it all literally of course as it is always mostly based on opinion not fact but it does help you gain an understanding of your own thoughts and feelings about medication and ADHD through hearing a broad range of information and ideas around it.

I hope you can find another path...... especially as you are conciously looking, it shows a bright inquiring mind - one that society needs more of and society needs your bright mind to be working to its full potentual - a bright mind that is overmedicated is a disaster for all of us.

On the other hand if you are really not able to function to your best and happiest without the medication perhaps talking through with someone (a councellor) about your reservations to take medication and see if they can help you be more at peace with whatever you decide.

All the best xx

you could see a therapist or doctor of some sort and find different ways to keep you focused on your assignments or whatever you happen to be doing at the time and if that works you can maybe take less of the medicine, there is also a medicine called concerta that you only need to take once in the morning

good luck

Why do you hate them?
my son was taken them because the school pushed me
to have him put on them.He started getting really tired and
not acting like himself.I took him off them because I felt they
were doing more harm than help.I now have him on a balanced
diet I have removed all foods containing red dye #40.
I have him on a strict diet and he takes evening primrose oil.
You need to talk to your Mom and Doctor.Good luck

try taking fish oil gel tabs. or anything with omega3 fatty acids.

age? if you're 21 or look close to 21, try buying a case of beer. i've done it for 29 years.
