What kind of doc do you see for adult ADHD?

What kind of doc should an adult see for a prescription for ADHD?

If you want a prescription, you can see a psychiatrist or your primary care physician. Either one can give a diagnosis, and both can prescribe medication. A psychiatrist will most likely have more experience with ADHD, and will allow for longer office visits. Although a child psychiatrist may be more well-versed in ADHD, as more and more adults are diagnosed with the disorder, more general psychiatrists are expanding their knowledge-base.

If you are looking for more than just medication, I would recommend a psychologist. Psychologists are often better trained in counseling than psychiatrists, and are often more willing to try treatments in addition to, or besides, medication. A psychologist can also often work with your PCP to get you the medication you need.

Kimberly, the ones with the most training in ADHD are child psychiatrists. Most of them handle adult cases as well. If you want to do a quick home screening test for possible adult adhd before seeing the doctor, you can get it here=> Its only 6 questions long and its free :)
