My daughter has been diagnosed with adhd and odd, the doc perscribed 15 mg of adderall, a stimulant.?

I was told by a friend I should try omega 3 fish oil. Any suggestions or docs and nurses out there with suggestions. Thanks. The side effects of this drug scare me and I won't give them to her anymore. Restlessness and vomiting. She is only 5 years old.

Stimulants are the preferred method of treating this disorder but PLEASE take your child to a specialist in child development before giving her the meds.

Yes the side effects of Adderall can be quite severe sometimes. Be aware that with all stimulants, your child's appetite will be affected.

Your ADHD specialist should try different medications and different doses to find the right treatment for your child. I would suggest finding another specialist. Your child should be seeing their specialist a minimum of every 3 months and you should be filling out the symptom survey each time.

My son reacted poorly to Adderall XR, with severe emotional outbursts during the "crash" period at the end of the day. We then tried the patch, Daytranna, but that was hard to use (some patches aren't manufactured correctly and you can't replace them at the pharmacy if they're screwed up - $7 a patch). Finally, we found Vyvanse, and this has been the best thing for him. It lasts all day, and the side effects are few & far between.

My boss's stepkids also both have ADHD (both parents had it, too - it's hereditary) and they do fine on Strattera.

So, find the right doctor who is willing to take the time to find the right treatment, and try out different medications to see what works best.

As children get older, they can sometimes control their ADHD consciously through concentration techniques, but this is hard even for adults with severe disease. Small children are unable to control their thought patterns or behavior because they are simply unaware cognitively of what's going on. Medication is the best treatment for one so young.

In addition, a recent study found a link between dopamine and ADHD, so in the future we will probably see low-dose medications for schizophrennia (lack of dopamine production altogether) being used to treat ADHD. It is a biological, inherited neurotransmitter disorder. Don't let anyone tell you different.

Omega 3 fish oil is only 1 of many things to consider. We all need omega 3 oil.

These are some of the other things to consider.

1. Diet
Everything daughter takes into her body directly effects her brain and how she acts. Certain things will increase focus and attention problems and even hyperactivity.

2. Mineral/nutrient deficiency
Everyone has mineral deficiencies and we all need to take a good vitamin and mineral supplement. Once I started to take a liquid and vitamin mineral supplement, most of my symptoms faded away.

With the right foods and supplements, you should see great improvements in her.

If you still have more questions, feel free to contact me.

Hi dark, as to your query about omega 3, I believe this article can enlighten you better than I can:
