My husband thinks he is ADHD. He treats it with Alcohol.?

I would like to know if anyone views this as odd....or if they have noticed similar behavior. He has 2-4 large alcoholic beverages 6/7 nights a week. He claims it is because he is so antzy that he needs the "downer" to help him calm down and relax at the end of the day.

He took a quiz and is very consistent with symptoms of ADHD. He is 23 years old.

I am concerned he is just a mild alcoholic or something. I don't want him drinking alcohol like he is. I want to help. I don't know how.

Any ideas or thoughts? Thanks.

Alcohol is the last thing that is going to help someone with ADHD. It sounds more like he is using ADHD as an excuse to drink. Usually drugs that treat ADHD are actually stimulants whereas alcohol is a depressant.
There is no such thing as a mild alcoholic. You either are an alcoholic or you aren't. If you aren't that doesn't mean that it will always be that way. Anyone can become an alcoholic.

If you feel that your husband is an alcoholic and you are looking for support, try Al-Anon
http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/

you could go to an alanon meeting you don't have to say any thing if you don't want to and it does not cost any thing ,just listen most likely you will here some one Else's story and you would swear they are living in your house! an alcoholic will come up with some reason to drink like ADHD or bad day at the office , the sun came up. ect.

Get him to a doctor and have him tested - then the doc can give him a scrip. Sounds like he may be looking for an excuse to cover his alcoholism.

A lot of mental illness patients lean towards alcohol during their hard times. But it's really dangerous, cus that's really how alcoholism gains power over people, especially when they are weak emotionally.
I suggest you immediate prevent him.

Look, I am Christian who has had problems before, and I can tell you right now, when people are emotionally weak, they get antsy. Medical professionals will call it whatever shorthand they want. But there's always a deep rooted problem connected to the need for comfort in certain areas of a person's heart. It is very evident with the patients' attempt to use something else to fill this void, food, alcohol, drugs, shopping, sex...etc. I can witness to you that both times my depression was diagnosed to all kinds of things and came with anxiety disorders. Medicine did not help,
and seeing him as a medical patient does not help.

After wasting all my time and energy in medical bills, and filling up my time with all kinds of fun events and relaxation did not help me anything. But two things did: counseling and reading the Bible.

We humans spend lots of time thinking up ways to help ourselves, but no physical method is actually proven to cure any mental illness. The reason is that it is a spiritual problem, and it's beyond us. Only returning to the Father can help. And I mean really really repenting to Him and believe in His power in your life can transform you.

I had been a "Christian" most of my life, but it wasn't until God cured me of my depression and anxiety disorder did I realize how powerful and loving God really was. And I also
found that believing God meant so much more than just knowing God is God, but to unendingly ask Him for help and repent our deepest secrets.
