Medical Pros Only - Adult ADHD Treatments?

My prescribing psyciatrist has decided I need to stop taking Adderall (20 mg 3Xdaily)because I am 53 yrs old and there is increased risk of stroke. He wants to prescribe provigil as an alternative. Read the side effects of provigil which include surprise surprise - stroke. I have friends who are patients of this psychiatrist. All of us with different symptoms but he told all of us we suffered from bi-polar mood disorder. In two cases the women went on meds for bi-polar and had horrible reactions including curling up on the floor of a local supermarket screaming hysteically. As soon as they went off the meds those symptoms disappeared. After comparing notes with my friends, I'm wondering if the change in meds is part of recommended treatment for adult ADHD. Suggestions, recommendations please!!!

Stimulants don't jive well for people who are bipolar. Stimulants in general work well on only a small subset of individuals who are only ADHD. Since many dx overlap this is only a small group of people. It is pretty difficult to distinguish between people exhibiting symptoms of bipolar and ADHD. I have found that most adults who carry a bipolar dx are treated with it with bipolar meds and these people were previously dx ADHD. Once dx bipolar they lost the ADHD dx. There are many meds out there from different classifications that are rather broad spectrum (meaning that they work well for bipolar, depression, BPD, psychosis, anxiety ect.)

My suggestions: I agree with Lisa do not change anything without getting a second opinion. In the meantime consult your PCP about your concerns about a stroke. The PCP can take some precautions, and evaluate your risk of a stroke. The PCP can run some bloodwork, check your lipids, triglycerides, bloodpressure, EKG, stress test. Check with your PCP first but unless allergic or you have a bleeding issue a baby aspirin a day is recommended to anyone over 25 yrs old.

I recommend you get a second opinion from another doctor. I would be a little worried from what your saying. yahoo answers is not the place for a second opinion as you can never be sure who your dealing with so please seek another doctor just to see what they think if anything. take care good luck
