Preschooler with ADHD -are these traits typical or is it just my son's personality?

Overbearing, insensitive, intelligent, creative, loud (really loud), stubborn. I guess it doesn't matter- he is what he is- but still curious.

Also, anyone have an online resource specific to young kids with ADHD? I am having a hard time living with him right now.

it could be some sensory issues in addition to the ADHD. I think if you read a book called "the out of sync child" you may find a lot of your son in some of the descriptions that they give. It may be as simple as changing some of his activities or the way you approach some situations... there is a connection between sensory processing and behavior.

another good book to read is called "driven to destraction"...written by a psychiatrist who diagnosed his own ADHD during his psychology rotation in med school.

You might not realize this, but you are asking the absolute best and most important question about your child: Is it ADHD or is it my son's personality?

Good for you!! Most people I work with tend to jump right to - it's ADHD, it's all ADHD.

The traits you are describing can be a little bit of both. Some of them are common traits that we know is typical of children with ADHD (intelligent, creative, loud, & stubborn). But as you already know, these traits can also just be about your son's personality.

Not sure if you are looking for advice -- but keep up the great attitude. You really are ahead of the game. Focus more on the behaviors, understand how ADHD will impact your child and his surroundings, and you will do well.

Best of luck.

It could be his personality, many children are like this. I would talk to his teachers and see what they have to say. some children, like mine act totally different in school than at home. at home they are both at times what you described, at school they are both angels. When I talked to their teachers they thought I was crazy because they are both so well behaved at school.

If you are really concerened you should talk to his doctor and get an evaluation. Early Intervention is free, and the services, if needed are free.

And yes he is what he is, like everyone but if he does have issues this is the best time to correct them or make them better, so he and you will have an easier time in the future.
