ADD/ADHD medication and weight gain?

I was prescribed Concerta (54mg) 4 years ago to treat ADD. I lost about 15lbs within the first 6 months. I stayed around that weight for about a year and a half, then gradually over the next 2 years I gained over 30lbs. I鈥檓 now around 25lbs over weight.

I'm very active. Both my parents and my brother are very slim, plus I probably consume quite a bit less than the average person does daily, the problem is that it鈥檚 all at once, right before bed.

Yesterday I saw my doctor and I explained why I thought it might be causing me weight gain, I asked if it was common and all he said was 鈥淎h, that鈥檚 interesting.鈥?

Has anyone experienced weight GAIN as a long term side effect of being medicated for ADD/ADHD? If yes, was the weight lost again once you stopped taking the medication?

My son has been on all different sorts of ADHD meds (including Concerta) and weight gain was never a problem for him. I'm suspecting that your weight gain stems from the fact that most of what you eat during the day is eaten right before bed...when all the food just lays in your stomach and turns to fat. When you go to sleep, your body's metabolism slows down and won't digest/process the food properly. That's what causes weight gain. What you should do is change your eating pattern. Eat no later than say 5:00 or 6:00, go out and do things after you eat (you say your very active). Eat most of your food early in the day, this way you'll burn the calories and you'll start dropping weight. Also watch WHAT you're eating for dinner. Try to stick with the healthier foods for dinner and stay away from McDonald's/fast food. Don't try taking yourself off the Concerta. Only your doctor should be doing that. Good luck.
