Sleeping aids?

3 questions regarding over the counter sleeping pills.

1. Since I have trouble sleeping I take 2 over the counter sleeping aids every night, even though the recommended dosage is 1. How bad is it for me to do this?

2. Can you develop an addiction to over the counter sleeping pills?

3. I know it's bad to be taking sleeping pills, is this a serious problem or not really?

Thank you

OK! This is a topic I know TONS about!
If you have been having sleep trouble for more than 2 weeks, SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY. A regular doctor is fine, but if you have a choice, find a sleeping disorder specialist or maybe even a psychiatrist. Tell them what has been happening to you, even if nothing in your daily regiment has changed. ESPECIALLY if your daily regiment hasn't changed!!!!! Sleeping is a primitive, natural, necessary, element in maintaining our daily functioning!! When the body doesn't sleep on it's "own", on a frequent basis, that is a sign that something is wrong. It could be bio-chemical, or it could be something external that is affecting the mind/body. Or it could be BOTH!! If you aren't convinced by what I've said, consider this: Sleep deprivation is a well known torture tactic used on POW's to gain information from them. It's quick and it's cheap and it works. EXTREMLY WELL. Get my drift? Don't belive it? Yahoo it or Google it. The mind/body is inextricably linked. But if you want to wait it out, that's your choice. If this is your choice, I recommend the following in determining wether or not you should convince yourself to see a doctor. (I think you should.):

First: Note what you do, and eat, and drink, during the hours you are awake, 4-5 days out of the week. Note the amount of sleeping pills you are taking. At what time and the dosage. If you try to sleep, but can't, and then take more pills, note that too!! Chart all of this for 2 weeks. You can continue taking your over the counter sleeping pills, but I must stress, DO NOT exceed the recommended dosage on the box!!!! And read what side effects you should look for to indicate if you are at a "toxic" or "dangerous" level!!!!! But if you don't want to do that, DO NOT take a higher dose than what you are currently taking!!!!

Sleeping pills, of ALL KINDS, have a risk of "dependancy" or "addiction". Taking sleeping pills, to sleep, isn't the problem. NOT SLEEPING is the problem!!! You have a SLEEPING problem, not a pill problem. Although, if you keep taking more and more pills, beyond the recommended dose, you may not have a sleep problem anymore. You'll just go to sleep and never wake up!!!! And I don't think that's the kind of sleep you want! :-)

The mind is like a VW Bug. It's strong, reliable and small, but it also needs gas to run. Without stopping for gas, the car doesn't work. So if you think of your life as clowns, and you stuff clowns(life), into the car(your mind), eventually, the car is gonna fill up pretty quick. And when the car(mind), reaches capacity with all the clowns(life), you stop, let the clowns out, and you get some gas(sleep). And then, you start all over again the next day with stuffing clowns in the car.

See? Your having a hard time stopping for gas my dear, and the car is getting pretty full of clowns!!

Good Luck to You and Best Wishes.

it depends.
i get insomnia really bad sometimes (inability to sleep)
and i bought these things called easysleep
but they are made out of a natural thing called
Valerian
its some kind of root i think
but it is safe
no addictions
it works (for me)
it says to take one but ive taken up to 3 and im fine
so give it a try =D

the answer to all three don't take them if u don't need them. cut back on any sugar or caffine that u have in the afternoon. u can also try things like melatonin they will help u sleep more naturally and they are not as addictive as the otc pills.

1-they are addictive potentially and do have side effects
2-yes, potentially but ask your pharmacist
3-over some time period yes....depending on the type and dosage; better to ask your pharmacist with these types of q's.
4-try to send love and forgiveness to all before you close your eyes to sleep and drink tons of water during the day...sip water at night if wake up and don't exercise right before bedtime or drink (esp. caffeine) or eat past 8 pm
