For a dog with inoperable bone cancer, know any nutrients/aids to extend a healthy lifestyle?

A 9 year old Great Dane, any knowledge is helpful! Food? Excersize? Prayer?

Prayer is always a good thing. Also look into a product called K-9 Immunity - here's a link about it and also a good general information on cancer in dogs. One of the links of the left gives diet information.

I am truly sorry for you. Unfortunately, once the cancer infiltrates bone, there is really nothing you can do. You can try a Holistic Vet if you can find one. Try the phone book or ask your regular vet if they have a listing for holistic vets. Other than that, just keep him comfortable. When he stops being able to get around or eat at all, it is time to let go.

I just went through this two years ago. I lost my Greyhound, Pup - at age 11 1/2 to Osteosarcoma Bone Cancer. It was also too far advanced to do an amputation and chemo.

My best advice is to not be afraid to dose him heavily on the pain meds that the vets give you. Bone cancer is extremely painful.

Do your best to keep him eating. The last couple weeks are the hardest. I found that if I scrambled a bit of kibble in eggs, and put in some cheese and bacon ... I could keep him eating. If you dog stops eating their dog food, just feed him anything he WILL eat ... rice cooked in broth, deli chicken.

Take lots of photographs of your Dane right now. I know your heart is breaking, but please take the time to do this. The photos you take now will soon be priceless to you.

Do whatever you can to keep your dog happy. Lots of love and treats are in order!

And when the time comes, it is much better to release him from the cancer pain a day early, then a day too late. I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

Sending a hug to you both!

you are definitely in my prayers and as far as any supplements there really isnt any i can think of off the top of my head. talk to your vet about a realistic time line and also about quality of life. as long as you still have a quality of life then you are doing good. the tough time comes when that goes downhill. good luck and i will keep you in my prayers. i wish you some comfort in this tough time.

Been through this with two of my Great Pyrenees. Just love him, and keep him comfortable, and know when it's time to let go. This is heartbreaking but we owe it to our pets to do what's best for them, as they would for us. Take care.
