Can a mother with hiv/aids give birth to healthy uninfected babies?

AIDS: Some Questions and Answers

Q: What are HIV and AIDS?

A: AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is the late stage of infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). AIDS can take more than 8-10 years to develop after infection with HIV. HIV-infected people can live symptom-free lives for years; however most people in developing countries die within three years of being diagnosed with AIDS.

Q: How do people get infected with HIV?

A: HIV is transmitted mostly through semen and vaginal fluids during unprotected sex without the use of condoms. Globally, most cases of sexual transmission involve men and women, although in some developed countries homosexual activity remains the primary mode. Besides sexual intercourse, HIV can also be transmitted during drug injection by the sharing of needles contaminated with infected blood; by the transfusion of infected blood or blood products; and from an infected woman to her baby 鈥?before birth, during birth or just after delivery.

HIV is not spread through ordinary social contact; for example by shaking hands, travelling in the same bus, eating from the same utensils, by hugging or kissing. Mosquitoes and insects do not spread the virus nor is it water-borne or air-borne.

Yes. As long as the mother's sac doesn't burst. Years ago, if a woman was HIV+, family planning was the last thing on her mind; HIV and pregnancy just didn't mix. The fear of transmitting her HIV to her unborn baby during pregnancy was too great for most women. Not to mention that pregnancy and HIV was many times much too much for one women's body to handle.

But the advent of HIV medications and the acceptance by physicians that HIV positive women can get pregnant, carry the baby to term, and not pass HIV to the newborn has given these women renewed hope of family and motherhood. However, HIV and pregnancy together is not without risk.

But if women are aware of these risks and work closely with their doctors, there is no reason HIV should prevent them from becoming a mother.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!!

Yes it is possible. To start with, the mother will need to be on medication throughout her pregnancy, then she can't have natural birth, a c-section is necessary. But at the end, she can have a healthy uninfected baby.

Yes she can. With good medical advice she can. If she takes HIV meds to keep the virus in check and if the baby is born by a c section the risks are very low that the baby would be HIV+.
