Can cats/kittens get aids? i know they can get leukimia but aids? |
i didn't know that kittens could get aids, is this true? because if it is that's really sad. does anyone know if they can? and how the virus was spread from humans to cats? Feline AIDS cannot be spread to humans, and Human AIDS cannot be spread to cats. Different viruses. FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) is spread from blood to blood or saliva to blood contact. It's rare for kittens to have it unless their mother was infected. It's most common amongst unneutered outdoor cats because they fight a lot - fighting is the most common way for the disease to spread. Cats can still leave a fairly long time with this disease, especially if they contract it in later life. As with humans, the disease can be present for years before it starts to cause problems. There is a vaccine that has been developed in the USA for FIV, but it's efficacy is not yet known. Feline Leukaemia (FeLV) again cannot be spread to humans. There is an effective vaccine available for it - unlike with humans, feline leukaemia is caused by a virus, and it can therefore be vaccinated against. Chalice EDIT: Soccer Mom is pathetic if she really thinks only gays get AIDS - what a surprise, she doesn't accept email. People who talk crap like this never do, they don't have the courage of their convictions. Source(s): vet nurse, feel free to email No. This is not logical. you can only get aids from wet substance to wet substance like saliva and mucus and sexual liquid. Unless you are a freak then you can't get the aids. It is a myth that aids came from monkeys. No, felines and canines cannot get AIDS or HIV. There are other immune deficiencies that they can get, but not the human form. BUT, catpat is partially incorrect in saying that HIV did not come from monkeys. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) are related. http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/article... They don't get AIDS, but they can get FIV which is Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. Similar to HIV, but not the same. Humans can't get FIV and cats can't get HIV/AIDS. http://www.animalhealthchannel.com/fiv/... |
