Why did her college take away $12,000 of her GUARENTEED finacial aid? |
They said that it was guarenteed and they just took most of it away! What can my family do to get it back (atleast some of it)? You will have to describe more of the situation than you have given us. usually because the financial aid application had errors or lies on it, is why a college can rescind aid offers. Your friend and her family need to get in touch with the schools financial aid officer and find out why and what can be done to correct it. What kind of aid? Was this aid from the federal government, the state, the institution? Were errors made on the application and the school made corrections? Talk to the financial aid office...they will be able to give you the reasons as to why the aid was lost. The only thing you can do is call the financial aid office. Usually there is someone there that will do all they can to help her. Being a college student, applying for financial aid is tough. First of all, your friend may have lied or taken the app in to the college and people helped her fill things out, and that person lied. Second, if they did an audit and something wasn't correct, that could explain things. Also does your friend live at home with her parents? If so she may not qualify for some financial aid programs that are available, simply because she is not independent, and her parents are footing the bill. In KY if you're not 23 or 24 (not too sure about the age) even if you're living on your own without your parents' help, they still add in their income, if you haven't had bills like electric and phone in her name for at least a year. If the college was giving her the money then they may have taken it away. I would call financial aid and talk about it, or better yet stop by the financial aid office. If she could log on to her student account online, then she would know for sure if someone just told her she was getting the money or if she actually had it taken away. College student and FAFSA applicant. That is a pretty vague question without any specifics as the type of funds and reasons the school gave for taking it away. As it was 12000 I would guess that it was a institutional scholarship or grant which is based on a lot of factors and sometimes is just there as a filler if the student does not get other funds. For example she applies for financial aid and does not receive grants but the school decides they want to give her money, they give her 12000. Then an adjustment is made to her FAFSA that makes her eligible for 2000 in Pell, 1300 in ACG and a 2000 state grant. At the same time she applied for a scholarship for 6000 and receives it, these funds are more than the 12000 filler grant so the money is put back into the pot for other students. Another case is if she went over the cost of attendance at the school and is no longer eligible for the funds or if the funds have a stipulation of full time attendance and she attendend less then that. There is always a reason why funds are removed from a students award so ask, in most cases the financial aid office will not give any information out over the phone and if they do they will probably only discuss it with a student so if you have to call have the student on the phone with you. |
