I agree with spookie, and I live in the country Oprah opened the school in, namely South Africa. I think your questions should be, is financial aid the answer ?? does Africa really need it ?? and is it spent properly ?? how many despots and tin pot dictators have benefited from aid ?? and how much aid is actually spent in the countries it is given to ?? You can probably get stats from USAID, but you know stats, one has statistics, statistics and damned lies, and say USAID proudly says that 1 billion dollars was given to a country in aid, how much actually made it there, how many weapons supplied, how much genetically modified coen was foisted on and unwanting population, how much was spent on salaries of american workers contracted to work there, how much was spent on american goods for countries that have no real back up for the things given............ Aid is far more complex than people believe and America will not solve the woes of Africa just by throwing money at the problem. I have met many well intentioned Americans working in Africa, but you know what they say about to the road to hell. You have raised a very interesting question but I feel you need to investigate the whole philosophical debate behind aid and its practical applications. And there interesting exercise would be to follow the paper trail through USAID and follow one payment from getting a quote for some goods or dervice through to the supplier getting final payment................. perhaps another way to open your eyes would be for you to come to Africa and see for yourself what its like and how the perceptions you have there are different from the perceptions in the country where the aid is received. Life is not all about stats..........
I believe its good to help out a neighbor or friend, but really look at the USA, we have people here living on the streets, some choose it, some r forced. look at our medical system, some can't even see a doctor, or dentist, even w/ medical insurance. We should help our people here in the states first then help others, Oprah built & furnished a school for girls out of the states, do u know how many girls here in the states that would love to go to that school ????
