How do i become independent?(to get financial aid for school)? |
How do I become Independent if im 20 years old ?the school says im still considered a dependent untill im 24...I still live with my mom but she cant afford and is not helping with my college expenses at all... Under federal regulations, there is no way you can declare yourself independent. You are not 24, are not married, and not an orphan, are not a veteran, and do not support your own child/children. Even if you moved out on your own, very few schools will make an exception. Tax filing status is irrelevant for financial aid. Only those who have been paying their own health insurance, car insurance for a vehicle titled in their own name, and 100% of their own bills can be considered as independent if they don't meet the other requirements. And again, many schools still won't make an exception. Ask your financial aid officer anonomously for confirmation of what I've said. Source(s): Been in financial aid 18 years If she's claiming you as a dependent on her taxes, than you can't claim independent. get a room or apartment and declare that you are independent on the application. Also your parents may not claim you as a dependent on their taxes for the year preceding your application Leave home. Get a job. Become independant. They can only call you dependant if you truly are dependant. If you are 20 then you could have been in and out of the military by now, gone around the world, voted in state and local elections, filed state and federal income taxes and had your own girlfriend, apartment and dog by now. 24 is the cutoff. You can't be on your parent's health insurance anymore after you're 24. Let's get on that right away, shall we? You have to be 24 to file for financial aid as an independant because of the regulations regarding the FAFSA. The only way to get around it is to join the military. you can get married, join the military, have children, parents decease. |
