First Aid kit for fish...what do i need? |
What are the typical fish meds to treat my fish in case of infections or diseases? I'll recommend the following: For parasites: Quick Cure and Clout For internal infections: Furanase and Cipro For external bacterial infections: Tetracycline and Ampicillin For protozoans: Clout and Flagyl Along with salt, those will cover most any problems you ever have. I would suggest storing the antibiotics in a zip top baggie in the freezer as this will extend their life by a year past the expiration date. Don't freeze the other meds, most of them don't expire anyway and some would be damaged by freezing. Also, don't fall for cure all type medications. Things that say they do everything well, usually don't do anything well. I would also avoid very gentle, light weight "medications" like the various "-fix" medications on the market. They rarely actually cure diseases and once it;s in your tank, you want to hit it hard and fast. All of that said, the single most important thing to have for fish first aid is a quarantine tank. Always, always quarantine new fish for at least 2 weeks before adding them to your tanks. That will solve most problems and confine treatments to that one small tank. MM uh i dont know but there is probley a seed that does it or a flake I used sea salt for most infections and diseases. Malachite Green is helpful for a variety of skin parasites. If you live in a very rural area, then consider getting one package of gram negative antibiotic and one package gram positive antibiotic. Other than that, I didn't use anything else unless there was a very specific problem. My fish just didn't get sick often until they were very old. Kept aquarium fish for 25 years plus you cant go wrong with aquarium salt. Good for paracites and fungal infections. Also when adding new fish and after water changes. In my fishroom, you will find 2 boxes that contain 10 ea. of the big boxes of aquarium salt. Also stress coat, while it is consider water conditioner, it is good for when fishes are sick as it helps them re-grow their slime coat which helps them fight off problems. But i also use jungle buddies, they have a wide range of profucts such as paractie clear and fungus clear. They even make a all in one tablet that will cure paracites and fungal problems. Melafix - Heals open wounds & abrasions, treats fin and tail rot, eye cloud, mouth fungus and promotes regrowth of damaged fin rays & tissue. Pimafix - Treats fungal infections and both internal and external bacterial infections. Will not adversely affect the biological filter, alter the pH, or discolor water. Safe for reef aquariums and live plants. For use in fresh or salt water. PimaFix has been formulated to work in combination with MelaFix to enhance effectiveness against fish diseases. *copy & pasted directly from product descriptions* And... Aquarium Salt - For the prevention of parasites, treatment of wounds, and other illnesses All three of these are very mild medications that won't damage your biological filtration (the good bacteria), are safe for fry & other sensitive fish, and can often be used together with stronger antibiotics. Remember, these are mostly for the early prevention of illnesses and won't fix larger problems. You'll have to get specific medication for whatever visits your tank. |
