Difficult financial aid situation, help?

My mother won't give me her tax papers so that I can fill out fafsa. I can't file independent (tried already) and I can't get any student loans because fafsa is needed in order to apply (unless I try a private student loan).

My mother and I never get along and never really contributed towards anything in my life, however my grandmother raised and usually paid for everything.--she wasn't my leagal guardian though. I've asked a financial aid advisor at my school if I could use my grandmothers tax papers to file my fafsa last year and they gave me the whole "Is she your legal guardian? Then no" crap.

(1)Has anyone ever been in a similar situation? (2)Do you think i should at least try to file my grandmother's papers and see what happens? (3)Also, i'm 20 and living on my own......after you're 18 does it even matter who your legal guardian is anymore(<<something i was just curious about)????

Unfortunately, you're going to HAVE to have your mother's papers in your situation. File a lawsuit on your mom if you have to.

You need to talk to the financial aid advisors and get them to have you sperated from your mother... I forget the exact term. In the financial aid world you need your parents info until you are 24, so you need to legally have it shanged to being independent of your mother, then you will not need her tax information anymore.
Talk to your Financial Aid officer about how to be determined as an independent student. There are steps you can take for that, especially since your grandmother has done most of the raising.
Did your mom claim you as a dependent on HER taxes, if she did, you need to see her tax papers in order to fill out the fafsa. If she didn't then you should be able to file by yourself. You do NOT want to use your grandmother's papers, that is highly illegal, you could get in big trouble for that. I don't know why the financial aid lady is telling you it matters, but if you lived with your mom for the majority of last year, then it does.
why not scholarships?
I found interesting scholarships & work options here. Good luck!
