Disabled female looking for Free small dog to be Aid Animal its Impossible,Why don't Breeders donate SML breed |
If your a breeder, and read this will you be willing to donate 1 pup per litter to disabled people? Can you get a tax write off if you do? Disabled All my life, now older need a friend,Helper. Thankyou small dogs are usually TOO small to be helper dogs, thats why they like BIG ones. Small ones are great companions, but they can't open doors, turn on lights, open the fridge, pull wheelchairs, carry books...etc. So you may want a small dog, but you really need a big one to help you...and not all dogs have the temperment to do the job. do you need a companion dog, or assistance dog?? most small dogs would not be able to acommodate your needs...companion animals are great to have if they are well-mannered, and house trained...check w/ your local animal shelter, or aspca...i'm disabled, as well...i have a big companion dog who keeps me company, and a great cat that just likes to be pet...they really offer great comfort when i need it Perhaps you need to see a rehabilitation counselor. If you can attend to activities of daily living with the help of an animal, this would be a good place to make inquiries. These animals are VERY EXPENSIVE to train and maintain. They are not meant to be pets, they are working dogs. Donating a pup would not be of much use if the animal is not properly trained. Helping and guide dogs are typically matched with people who need them after they are well trained adult dogs. A good question, but it would have to depend on what you want the dog to help with. Small dogs can be trained to help or be companion dogs. My sister who passed away a few years ago, had a companion dog who was trained to pick up any changes in mood etc prior to an epileptic seizure coming on, and she would also bark to gain attention of anyone close by, who would hopefully roll my sister on to her side, and call an ambulance. Usually this worked well. Sadly in 2005 the poor little dog barked for 3 days before someone called the police, by then my sister was gravely ill, dying a few days later, even though her neighbors knew her dog was a trained companion dog. Snow drop is a chihuahua cross, she had been trained by a person who trains dogs for the blind etc. I am not sure about where you live but in Australia Rotay get dogs from the pound. And train them as hearing dogs (I assume they are the ones as guide dogs and assistant dogs are mostly labadors Have you tried to contact rescue groups for dogs and ask them??? That's a very good question. We have dogs who are volunteers in our hospital. They bring a lot of joy to everyone. They do have smaller dogs that I'm sure would be good as an Aid dog. Have you checked at all of the animal hospitals and shelters? Our Humane Society really does a good job of matching people up with the right pet. I hope you find a friend. Dogs are priceless. |
