Do you think the 1986 amnesty was just a band aid?

Our immigration laws are ancient and really don't address issues of today.I can understand many people being frustrated by the amounts of illegal immigrants in the U S.If you're frustrated then why don't you want changes?I guess this is what I really don't understand. Can you please enlighten me?

I don't even think it was good enough to be considered a band aid. It didn't resolve anything, the plan wasn't even executed. They gave the amnesty and called it a day. They didn't even bother to enforce the new policies. I think it was meant to be a solution and it failed miserably. Make all illegal immigrants legal and their are no more illegals left. Genius! right? No. Maybe it could have been, had the laws been enforced.
I am frustrated with the amount of illegal immigrants and I'm not sure what you mean by "changes." Do you mean why the immigration reform bill (amnesty #2) was shot down? Amnesty doesn't work, that's why....we already tried it. It doesn't resolve the problem, it doesn't give us security, and it was a poor excuse of a solution with way too many loopholes. I certainly wasn't willing to settle for that, knowing we can do way better. In fact, the laws we have right now are better. I don't see any reason not to enforce laws... and if they don't work out, THEN we need a change. What is the punishment for being in a country illegally? It's deportation. Seems to work for other countries! Let's give that a try.

*edit* Me too! We could use something a little more "comprehensive" then what was previously brought to the table.
I think it was more like a gashing wound that invited the problem we have today. Amnesty only encourages more to come, expecting to receive the same.
I think our immigration policy is the most generous in the world. I don't think it should be changed. As great as we are, we can't be responsible for the poverty of the world. It can't get better as when one dies one or two more replace him. How could we even begin to address a problem so large? We need to be selective on who are becoming citizens of our country. We have plenty of poor who could better be helped with a person of a higher salary and greater taxes being paid. The future is now and if we become saturated with the world's poverty we will fail as a nation. And if we are over populated no one can win or live. I'm not against charity but I believe it has to begin at home.
It was a foolish mistake generating more liars and more illegal immigration.

It's difficult to conceive of a country where CITIZENSHIP is meaningless and the illegal immigrants have more rights without it!

There is absolutely Zero incentive for them to become Citizens since they get every imaginable government hand-out in addition to speaking Spanish instead of English.

It's simple If you're here illegally in any shape, form, or fashion you go back!
It was a practical joke and the middle class was the punch line
