Pell Grants are free for a full year you could get some where between 6-8,000 and federal loans. In many situation it depends on what year you are upper classmen get more aid than freshmen almost twice as much. You can also get private loans up to 30,000 a year.
receive is no limit to financial aid. You can in fact in certain situations be awarded more money than your tuition for living expenses. This is very rare although my sister-in-law was able to receive it. This was because she was a warden of the state but just telling you that it is a possibility.

After you fill out your FAFSA and get your estimated family contribution (EFC number, which can be '0' if you made very little and are over 24/aka independent by federal definition) they subtract that from your tuition costs+an estimated budget (usually online at school website, instate, out of state, etc) and try to provide the remaining amount with Pell grants (usually not exceeding $2000) scholarships and loans.
