Acupuncture school?

I am planning on going to school for acupuncture in January of '09. What can I do now to get me ready for acupuncture school (books to read, things to study)

.
Plan ahead.

The suggestions made by the posters here are fantastic. My answer here may not be the most popular one, but to become a successful practicing acupuncturist, you will also need to be business saavy.

You will learn everything you need to know in order to become a competent, properly licensed professional acupuncturist when you enroll at school.

What they will not fully teach you is the business aspect of running a clinic. There will be hundreds of graduates just like you who will graduate, have their diploma, but will struggle with how to run the business side of running a clinic. It can be daunting and scary at the same time.

Try not to worry.

You are planning ahead, and you will benefit as a result. Ask yourself the following:

How should I write a successful business plan? How will I market? Do I have enough funds to last me through the first 3 years of business? How will I manage my student loans and office payments? How will my practice differ from other acupuncturists? Should I specialize?

I recommend that you either take business courses, plan out a business plan, have a solid marketing plan, read up on business books specifically geared towards running an acupuncturist business, and to save up.

Your first 3 years out of acupuncture school will be rough, but proper planning can take the pain out of this predictable trend that many students find themselves in.

Best.

Read books about accupuncture
go to an accupuncture office and ask questions you have

Go to the closest book store like Boarders, Barnes and Noble. Go to the school and see if their is any summer classes you could take or meetings or convention about acupuncture

Do some web searches... there is a ton of info out there. You may be able to find a syllabus for acupuncture classes that will list books required for study, and you could get those books and start learning early.

Just out of curiosity, where are you going? This is something I want to do, but at the moment simply cannot afford it. There is a school near me, in Louisville, CO that I have heard is one of the best schools in the nation. It's called the Institute of Taoist Education, and that's where I would like to go.

I would suggest perusing a college level human anatomy/physiology book, and "The Web that has No Weaver" by Ted Kaptchuk.

Other than that, enjoy your free time before you start. The OM programs tend to be time consuming... to say the least.
