Can acupuncture help with tinnitus?

Acupuncture can help with various types of tinnitus, yes. The specific treatments and success rates will vary a bit depending on the cause of your tinnitus (i.e. if it is a direct result of a traumatic head injury, it may take longer to treat than if it came on gradually over time.)

I've had mixed results with patients in my clinic who I have treated for tinnitus. In all cases however I have had patients improve (lessen frequency of the ringing or quiet it down) if it hasn't disappeared completely.

Be sure to find a nationally licensed practitioner, as the regulations can be lenient depending on the state. Practitioners with a valid NCCAOM license have received the most schooling and will be better equipped to handle complicated issues (which tinnitus can be).

Their web site has a list of all licensed practitioners: http://www.nccaom.org/find.htm
Therapies such as acupuncture, homeopathy and hypnotherapy and herbal treatments such as Gingko biloba have been shown to have very limited effect with tinnitus and success stories often tend to be anecdotal.
However, some people have found them to be beneficial. If you do decide to try one or more complementary therapies, it is in your interest to do some research and make sure the person treating you is qualified and recognised by the relevant national body.

Read The Aspirin Alternative by Dr Mike Loes. It has an interesting section on tinnitis (which is a bugbear to treat). You can find copies on Alibris.com
As a practitioner, I combine acupuncture, herbs and massage to help with tinnitus. Massage on the scalenes (muscles beside the neck), and releasing the jaw seem particularly helpful.
