What's the principle behind acupuncture?

wanted to know if anyone has experienced a lasting effect from it and if the pressure points they use are to redirect nerve inpulses? thus reducing the pain?

from a western point of view, the needles are creating a micro trauma to the body and the brain will release chemicals (endorphins, seratonin) and this changes mood and pain receptors. But if you are looking at an Eastern view, the needles are associated with different parts of the body and do different things to the body. so the theory is to balance the imbalances in the body and the body will heal itself. So if there is an imbalance with the heart "energy" not the organ. we use points to balance it out and symptoms will go away.
Basically western view is right but identification of so called accupoint is crucial not everyone will get same results at all points so professional will choose points to needle in on body where it stimulates neurons/receptors to get max production of opioids and endorphins from Autonomic nervous system.
