Allergies in 5 month old?

My 5 month old daughter has been rubbing her eyes a lot the last couple of days and under her eyes is purple. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced a child with allergies or could it be related to the fact that she got her 4 month shots yesterday?

My pediatrician informed me that infants do not actually get allergies (with the exception of food allergies) until they are older. Rubbing eyes is actually a sign of tiredness and the purple under her eyes could be another sign that she is tired or getting a cold.

If she has any fluid, pus, redness in or around her eye, or swelling around eye, then this could be a sign of an eye infection. Blocked tear ducts are very common at this age, but your daughter would most likely have some tearing and drainage coming from her eyes. Pink eye would cause redness in and around the eye. Another eye infection called cellulitis would cause swelling around the eye. Most likely since your daughter is affected in both eyes, she is either very tired or getting a cold.

Call your pediatrician if you are concerned. Good luck!

Heres something i found online....

Question
My one month old started draining in her right eye today. It was just a little crusty this afternoon. I wiped it with a wet cloth but tonight her eye looks puffy and has a little more crusty drainage. She has sneezed from the day she came out into the world at the hospital. She sometimes will get little sneezing spells. She eats the breastmilk I pump for her. She even eats the formula that I started to give her at night. She spits up after just about every feeding. Should I see if her pediatrician can see her tomorrow or should I wait? She has no fever and she has plenty of wet and soiled diapers. Do infants even have allergy problems?

Answer
Hi, Teresa,

She isn't sick and a visit can be scheduled at a convenient time.

She may have allergies, but a more likely problem would be a tear duct blockage causing the excess drainage. Stuffy noses and sneezing are a part of all newborns lives and don't really point to allergies.

Good luck, Dr. Olson

doctors say allergies don't develop in children for a couple of years.

could have a lot to do with the shots you should contact her doctor...it may possibly be an allergic reaction

When my daughter was 6 months old, one of her eyes got really purple and puffy, and I thought "Oh no! She has her fathers allergies..." It looked really bad and I freaked out and took her to the ER, and as it turned out, she scratched her eyeball. I gave her some eye drops for a while to prevent infection, and she was fine. I'm breastfeeding, and I found out that as long as you breatfeed, the baby has your immune system to protect them...
Also, the immunizations sometimes make them a little sick for a few days. When my baby isnt feeling well, she gets purple around her eyes.

seasonal allergies would not appear until after she is a year old. they have to be exposed to everything first... something like that.

i asked my doctor about allergies when my son was little.
