Canine Allergies?

I have a boston terrier/pug mix (a.k.a bugg) and she has really bad skin allergies. The vet instructed us to give her Benedryl and recommended a specific kind of omega-3/omega-6 tablets that we could get for her. We also switched her to Hill's Science Diet for allergies which has a larger amount of Omega-3 and Omega-6 but her allergies seem to be getting worse. Does anyone have any suggestions for Canine Skin allergies?

Many dogs have different allergies to different food products. It is possible that your dog is allergic to something in the food he is eating. Even though vets have always said that Hill's Science Diet is a great food, I've never seen the nutritional value in it.

Many dogs are allergic to wheat which is in many diets, and since people don't always realize this, they tend to try many diets with wheat before realizing that it is the wheat they are reacting to.

My dog is allergic to things in some treats, so we now only feed him all natural food and treats and have found that this really helps with his scratching. He is also on an oil that we got from our holistic vet that is all natural and gives dogs extra oil to help with their skin.

I highly recommend you take a look at the book called Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by Dr. Pit Cairns. It gives some natural home remedies for things like allergies. One of the things you may want to give a try that is recommended in that book is feeding ascorbic acid (also known as vitamin C). If you get the one for dogs from a natural health pet store, it will have instructions on how much to feed right on the label.

Also give minimal baths since the water dries out their skin and can often irritate it more.

Good luck!

Ask your vet about giving it an allergy shot. They can do that and it rlly helps

I would ask your vet if they do allergy testing. You can have blood tests done, which are pretty reliable. This will tell you what external things she is allergic to, like trees, inhalents, molds etc. Blood tests will not test for food allergies. You can also have skin testing which is more reliable, but costs more and most be done by a dermatology specialist. Based on the results of either, they can make vaccines to help desynsitize her. It is a bit of an expense but it is worth it and will save money in the long run from not needing oral meds as often. Good Luck.
