Food allergies showing up as Acne?

An allergist doctor told me that food allergies do not show up as break outs whatsoever. BUT whenever I eat Soy, wheat, dairy, or sugar I break out. I have never gotten an allergy test, but is it even worth it? I really have a feeling these foods are causing my acne.

Most "acne" is dirt, bacteria, etc from on the skin getting into folicles and getting "infected"..

Unfortunately, there is also acne that comes from under the skin. Which is probably what you have. Where the body is fighting something and pushes it out through the skin.

Allergies can certainly cause acne breakouts. You can tell your allergist that they're an idiot, better yet find a different one.

There are lots of skin conditions that actually are allergic reactions or side effects of allergic reactions. Ezcema, acne, hives, are just a few. Actually there is a severe form of hives which includes mini-white-heads all over severely irritated and red skin.

Most doctors are usually only schooled in the severe cases of allergic reactions, and rarely consider that smaller doses of allergens can cause smaller reactions (ie 1-2 zits vs a whole body hives).

Benadryl (orally and cream) and Cortizone creams should help heal the blemishes faster.

Allergy tests can be worth it, but it seems you already know what you're allergic to. If you're having other issues though, digestive, skin, cognitive, motor-skill problems, respiratory, vision.. then you may want to have some tests done.

You are breaking out in a rash - which may resemble acne - even get little white heads.... My daughter has the same problem and thank god we had a very diligent doctor - he truly listened to my description of symptoms and thru some trials and testing we figured out what her allergies are. We did do allergy testing - once at 3 yrs old and again at 8 yrs. Both times proved the same allergies and found a few more also. She got weekly allergy shots for about 2 years and no longer needs them weekly. She still has minor bouts of rash on her arms (tricep area) and also occasionally her cheeks. We know most of the triggers of this and try to avoid exposure. She also has asthma, and prior to her having an asthma attack (or trouble breathing) she will get red in the cheeks and have a minor breakout (rash). Please seek another opinion and the best advice I received from my doctor was to keep a health journal - listing dates, symptoms, diet, etc. It has proved to be very beneficial over the past few years. Best of luck :)

I believe they do cause break outs..I have an allergy to chocolate and when I eat some..I get hives and acne..What a combination!! I would see a dermatologist..Hope you get better..

it is possible, are you sure it is acne, it could be rosacea too

Food allergy tests are not reliable because allergens tend to overlap and mask reactions to others. Your own experience is the strongest indicator of your sensitivities. Gluten in wheat is a common allergen, so is casein in milk. For soy, could it be something else in the mix besides the bean? For sugar, well sugar can enhance the uptake of other irritants, like salicylates. Do you get an allergic reaction when you first take an aspirin? That would mean that you also are allergic to all spices and most fruits and vegetables.

I can suggest some good supplementary support if you should need it. Send me an email if you want to know about it.
