Can allergies cause flu-like symptoms??

I woke up yeaterday with VERY sore throat, a VERY painful cough and just fely like crap....Today I've been fatigued, low grade fever (99.1) and achey...I went to my college's doctor, and she listen to my lungs and explained to me that it's [rpbably my bosy's reaction the the first symptoms of my seasonal allergies(the trees nd grass are just beginning to bud here)...She explained that nasal drippage can drip down to my throat and lungs causing pain in my throat and lungs and coughing....makes sense--but I thought allergies had NOTHING to do with a low grade fever/chills/body aches....She put me on allegra and asked me to come back in 3 days if there is no imporovement......my question is it possible that this could be correct?? Thank you very much...

Thank you everyone!

Definitely possible. "Allergies" is a simple term that represents a broad range of hypersensitivity reactions to antigens (i.e. pollen, mold, etc). An allergy can present as a simple sniffle itch and can present as an acute life-threatening illness - depending on what type of hypersensitivity reaction a person has and how severe it is.
Unfortunately for you, low grade fever, chills, body aches are pretty common finding with other "classical" allergy symptoms such as your post-nasal drip. About 5 years ago, I stayed at a hotel (not very long though) and was given a room with something in it that set my allergies off like crazy. I had hot flashes and body aches along with the nasal and eye symptoms almost immediately. It sucked so I feel your pain.

I think your doctor did a responsible thing by recommending that your see him/her again in 3 days if you're no better. On the other hand, it is possible that your symptoms won't entirely improve on the Allegra even if an allergy is your only problem. Those meds are good but aren't cures.

I would be more concerned about a viral, bacterial or fungus cause of your symptoms if you developed higher fevers or severe body aches where your muscles or joints were actually painful to touch or pressure.

Hope you feel better soon!

if sugary food tastes off it is a bacterial infection or virus- if not- it's allergies. all those symptoms can be allergies

Yes, they can, but you might have a touch of the flu or a virus as well. I had the same thing last week. Started with allergy symptoms, then got really achy and feverish for two full days --could do nothing but sleep. Now I am just left with the sinus, congestion, wheezing, coughing, etc. I think I had a double-whammy of both the flu and allergy problems. My doctor gave me Zythromycin today for bronchitis. You need to go to the doctor if you are having yellow and/or green (mucous) from nose or when coughing. Hope you feel better. I was in bed all day last Thurs and Fri. Started feeling better on Sat.

Your doctor is probably correct, but may not realize that you could have the flu or a virus as well. Did you tell her about the fever and achiness?
