Does latex allergy (from dental work) ever go away? |
What's in latex that people react to so badly? If it's rubber, why aren't tire factory workers dreadfully sick? latex allergy, like most allergy, is an immune system response. When you develop the allergy, it is usually due to prolonged exposure to latex. When you have a reaction to latex such as when you have dental work, it is most likely you have always had a sensitivity to latex, that has progressed to an allergy. Latex is one of many thousands of types of rubbers. Anyone can be `allergic to any type of rubber. Latex is a common rubber, and one that most people come into contact with, thus we discover whether we are allergic or not. Latex has very small particles, easily absorbed into our skin, and even into our lungs via the air. It doesn't seem that once an allegy to latex is discovered that it ever goes away. It would be risky to test out wether you were actually still allergic since the allergic response/reaction can be severe. And many, many tire factory workers become very ill. There are now requirements of heavy personal protection (gloves, long sleeves, breathing masks, eye protection) that each factory worker should be using.
