Shihtzu has allergies I think?

I have a 4 year old shitzu/pekingese we recently moved across the country and I think she has allergies to the things outside....like humans do. i guess the cotton or whatever is in the air. Here eyes are itchy to here and they run a little. I don't think it an infection as they aren't goopy and gross it also comes and goes its not constent....anybody else have this problem? if so what should i do? I'm not someone who likes to put my animals on unnecessary medications and try to find home remedies for them.....just like i do for myself. Thanks for the input in advance!

You really should see the vet and find out the cause of the allergy. There are many different things that she could be allergic to.
My Lab suffers from a dust allergy and a seasonal allergy. She has monthly injections and antihistamines when it flares up to help control it.
See your vet, antihistamines may help her, but you need to get the right ones and the correct dosage.

It could be allergies but that would have to be diagnosed by a vet; if the symptoms aren't severe and she doesn't seem to be in any distress I wouldn't worry too much. It may be associated with the breed; I have a Shi-Poo (Shih-Tzu Poodle mix) that I recently adopted and his eyes water occasionally as well. He doesn't seem to be in any distress so I'll bring it up with the vet when I take him in for his annual checkup.

I'm with you on unnecessary medications; I believe in quality health care for my animals but you have to use common sense along with your vet's advice. My cat was losing patches of hair and I took her to the vet and was told that it could be allergies and he recommended tests, etc. I asked questions and then he said it could also be a hormone imbalance since she was fixed. I opted to try the medication for hormones first ($12) versus several hundred (or more) for allergy testing. After a few weeks, her hair had grown back and she has had no more problems.

Good luck.
