Dogs & allergies?

Does anyone know if there is a type of shampoo for dogs that reduces dander or something? I love my doggie but she makes me sneeze so badly! Besides the shampoo, what else can I do to reduce my allergies to her? I would never get rid of her. So,im hoping somewhere out there has experience maybe using certain shampoos or other little tricks..

thanks everybody !! ;)

opps, sorry, she is a chihuahua, 4 pounds, long hair

Feed her a high quality kibble and add some fish oil to her food every day (you can get it from a health food store, or even buy the tablets to give). This will help to keep her coat strong and healthy.

You can also feed her a raw egg once or twice per week, this also helps the coat from drying out.

How often do you groom her? Or is there someone else that can groom her for you, in the house? The more often she gets a good brushing, the more it will stimulate her natural oils in her skin and coat, also helping to keep it healthy. This will also reduce the amount of fur and dander that ends up throughout your home.

Don't over-bathe her, this will make the shedding and dander worse, because it will dry out her skin. Once every 4-6 weeks should be plenty!

Treating her to a groomer every few months should also help!

Good luck :D

Add: Since she's so tiny, if you do want to feed the raw egg, I'd suggest cracking one and splitting it into 3 servings over a week, saving it in the fridge. Serving one whole might upset her stomach.

Grooming does wonders.

You don't say which breed she is, so answers may vary. But go talk to groomers. Some breeds are more likely to cause allergies in their owners, whereas others, like poodles and designer "oodle" mutts like Golden Doodles and Schnoodles, tend to reduce allergic reactions. Your groomer can recommend a brushing regimen that should help keep your allergies at bay.

Also, if you have carpeting, a daily vacuuming is REQUIRED. The dander that accumulates will be terrible for your allergies. If you have hardwoods or other non-carpeting, get a sweeper similar to a Swiffer. A broom will lift the dander in to the air, but a Swiffer will pick up the dander on the floor.

Don't let your dog onto your furniture...especially your bed. It's near impossible to get dander completely out of upholstery.

Also, consider making Claritin and/or Zyrtec your friend.

its hard to tell i need to know what type of dog.. my chihuahua. they are very little dogs and are sincere to every little thing. its not the shampoo there are shampoos out there that will reduce dandruff and etc. but its actually your house make sure to sweep, dust, mop , and vacuum your house thorouly because the dust and dandruff will get into the puppies sinus and eyes wich will cause the puppy to sneeze and seem bothered.

I have horrible allergies and have wanted a puppy for years, i finally got one, but did some research, and this is what i was told.
Like some of the previous answers, fish oil does wonders for the dogs skin and coat, get food that contains high amounts of DHA i was told. I use Blue Buffalo brand dog food, this can be found at pet stores like Petsmart, you can also order a free sample and some info online at:

I was told by the dog trainers at Petsmart this food does wonders.

Also if you do bathe her at home use an oatmeal based shampoo, this prevents the skin from being dry and itchy. Brush her often to remove loose dead hair and skin.

Try using a carpet powder made for pets and allergies when vacuuming, or Fabreeze for allergies, it reduces allergens in carpet, fabric, upholstery, etc...

And as far as allergies, my doctor has prescribed Allegra-D and Nasonex. WORKS WONDERS. If i have an allergy attack i usually take Benadryl or Loratadine. Just be cautious, Benadryl will make you tired.

Using all of these methods, my allergies are fine. I am beyond surprised personally, as I'm allergic to everything.

Try some or all of these methods!! Good luck!!
