Golden retriever/lab allergies?

hi my dog is a mix and he is 4yrs old he always gets bad allergies. he bites on his skin and causes rashes all over. we put medicine on him and try to stop him from itching his dry skin all the time. does anyone know anyway to help sooth his dry skin or to help him with his allergies, the vet told us it is common for this kind of dog to have allergies. please help...any ideas are helpful

put some baby oil on it i believe thats wat mi cuzin did to her dog thats wat made it stop itching!!! im not sure though u might want to ask ur vet bout it before u try it though!!! hope it works!!!!!!!!

I have a 7 yr old golden retriever who has always suffered from skin allergies as well. The oatmeal shampoo helps a little, but my veterinarian has always recommended that I give her two benadryl a day. I was worried that the benadryl would make her groggy, but he said it doesn't affect dogs like it does humans. Still, I feel bad giving her so much so I usually just give her one a day during the summer months when her skin is especially bad - and it does seem to help.

What are you feeding this dog? If dry, does the food contain wheat, corn or soy (which are the top 3 allergens for dogs)?
Ever try a raw or natural diet? I have had at least 6 Labs from different lines & at least 10 Goldens over the past 30 years. None of the Labs had allergies. 3 of the Goldens did, one was bad but due to OVERVACCINATING as vets so often recommend, this compromised the immune system making her much more susceptable. The other 2 had minor allergies that were improved with a change of dry foods. On the 3rd dog I finally went raw & good bye allergies! There is a good chance that all the remedies you're trying are drying the skin out more.

Yes, the oatmeal shampoo will help alot along with any medication that your vet prescibes.

However do your dog a favor and invest in a head cone. They can be bought at most local pet stores for under 20 depending on the size of the dog. I have had labs all my life and we have dealt with this issue. They would have allergies so they would lick. then they would lick spots raw and it would hurt so they would continue to lick it. It was long painful circle for them. We bought the cone and it gave them a chance to heal and recover. It won't help with the autual allergies but there are other suggestions here for that.

In the mean time they may look funny but they will feel better. You might be worried that the cone will irritiate them, but our dogs got used to it and it didn't even get in the way. Hope this helps, good luck

Adding salmon oil and vitamin E to his diet might help. (The salmon oil doesn't work without the vitamin E to help the dog's body utilize the oil.) I do not know what your dog is allergic to, but if it is grains, I'd put him on a raw diet or a diet of grain-free dog food.

I had the same problems so I have a really good suggestion.

take him/her to the vet for medical assistant
