Breastfed baby has several sever allergies!?

My baby has had allergy problems since birth to just about everything. I want to continue breastfeeding but he is very sick and is losing a lot of weight. I know he could out grow the allergies but I was wondering if it is safe to mix a small amount of breast milk in the hypoallergenic formula and slowly increase the amount of breast milk until hopefully by 9 months he is 100% breastfed again. Has anyone done this or now if it will work?

You need to go on a very strict elimination diet so that he doesn't react to your milk and then work on making sure he is getting enough breastmilk.

Even hypoallergenic formula causes allergic reactions in highly allergic babies. It also increases the risks of developing more allergies -which I am sure you want to avoid.

Yes you can mix breast milk and formula. It is possible for your child to be allergic to something in the breast milk and for this I would say just switch. Clearly your child is not getting the benefits of the breast milk, from what you said, so why try to force something on him because society says it is best. Each child is different and if he is not getting nutrients from the milk by all means give him something else.

Your child has already received a good dose of antibodies and other things from the breast milk since he has had it since birth. You should not feel bad if you have to try something else.

Babies can grow out of their allergies, but for example milk allergies take up to 5 years to go away if they do at all, so it depends on the allergy. I do not think a few months will do it. You need to take him to an allergist to find out what the real problem is and then you can narrow down your approach. What if the issue is with 1 thing you eat that you could stop eating and then he would not have a problem with the milk?

Just see if you can find out the real issue and attack that before you make any big changes.

But the answer to your question. Yes you can mix any amount of milk and formula in a bottle. But if the child is truly allergic to the milk, mixing them will not work. You would have to stop giving him breast milk all together until you find out what in the milk could be causing him the problems.

If baby is severely allergic, and it's not possible for you to eliminate all the allergins from YOUR diet, then you will need to put him on hypoallergenic formula. And since frequent exposure to allergins makes it less likely that will outgrow the allergy you would need to keep even small amounts out of his diet. So I think in this situation, the hypoallergenic formula, without breastmilk is probably the best option. But you'd want to talk with an LC and a couple of good allergists to be sure.

The only person that could tell you that this is safe is your doctor...

But what is he allergic too? My son was allergic to Cows milk which was in my diet - he was lactose intolerant. So for a while I thought he was colic because he cried so much. But then I put him on Soy formula and he was allergic to that.

We eventually put him on Nutramigen and it worked wonders.. He is the happiest baby now...

It is very expensive this formula BUT I recently just got it covered under my insurance BCBS. As long as your doctor write everything down in his chart - it is easy for the insurance company to approve it. So the cans are $27. and he is going through them every 5 days - so my copay is only $5.00 per can and the copay is tax deductible.

Good luck!

I was alergic to breast milk. I still can't really drink milk....I would not use breastmilk at all if the baby is alergic to it. But then a medical doctor is the best person to answer these questions. I hope your baby gets better.

Do what you have to do...many babies are formula fed and very healthy ... it's your choice as a mom...your doing a great job and don't feel badly about wanted to do what's best for your baby...congrats and hope your little one gets better soon..:)

sorry to hear your baby has allergies to your breastmilk. i would ask your pediatrician what to do.
