Do any of you have a pet that has to be given shots for allergies? If so, can you give an idea of to expect.?

My mini schnauzer is going to have start having allergy shots next week and I am little nervous about giving them to her.

Put in the wrong catagory.. should be in dogs.. Sorry

It depends on what exactly they decide to give your dog. At the clinic I work at, we give Depo shots, usually about 1cc, in the muscle, and see how that works. For severe cases, we will also prescribe oral steroid tablets, along with Depo shots. Depending on how bad the allergies are, you may need a Depo shot every few weeks, to every few months, or even just in certain seasons, but your vet will explain all of this, just ask!

Don't be nervous, it's a little daunting at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's no big deal for you or your dog.

We have quite a few people at our clinic whose animals are being given injections for allergies. Usually the vials are ordered and when they come in, the vet or the vet tech will show you how to give the injections, they won't leave you hanging. It's a matter of pulling up the skin and giving the injection underneath the skin, not right down into the muscle. They will show you.

I've been giving my cat insulin injections for the past 3 years. At first I was really nervous. But once I found out that giving them the right way didn't hurt him, it's like no biggie anymore. It will be the same way for you.

Hope the medication helps him! Good luck!
