Most of grocery store dog food formulas, like IAMS, Pedigree, Science Diet, Purina,and etc contain "meat and bone meal" which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats that were euthanized in animal shelters. Their bodies are picked up and bought by the truck load by "rendering plants" , that also pick up road kill, dead live stock, and etc. They are shredded, and boiled. They skim off the fat on the top of the "soup" and collected it and sell it to pet food companies as "animal fat", the rest of the animals' remains are crushed up, dried and sold to dog and cat food companies as meat and bone meal.

It really depends on the allergies. Different dogs are allergic to different things. You need to start a food trial, feeding specific ingredients to see what causes your dogs reactions. You will want to try dog food with limited ingredients to be able to 'weed out' the particular irritant. Avoid foods the do not list the specific type of meat, that just say meat protein or something similar. Friends with everyone explains this well. The ingredients should be specific like lamb meal. The particular brand Canidae is a very good brand but has a lot of ingredients, so it would be hard to narrow things out. One of my dogs is allergic to many many things, but we have yet to actually find the culprits. We know certain types of dog food she cannot eat but not the particular ingredients (Kirkland lamb and rice, Canidae chicken and rice, Solid Gold wolfking, the list could go on- all good dog foods, but didn't work well for my dog) but she does pretty well with Wellness whitefish and sweet potatoes. I agree with all the other advice givers, stay away from common store brands, there is so much garbage and low grade meats that go into them.

I feed California Naturals...it comes in a variety of protein and carb sources (to make it easier to avoid what your dog is allergic to)...I love this food! My 2 dogs with allergies are doing so much better on it (I have two friends who feed it, as well-one of their dogs had virtually no hair on half of her body because of allergic scratching-this is the only prepared food that the dog can eat).
