Is ammonia burning my cats eyes or is it allergies?

I dont change my cats litter box as much as I should and her eyes look a little wet and the hair around them is a little thin. They get weepy and sad looking and I was wondering if the ammonia from her urine is burning her eyes. Could that be it or could it be allergies?

I doubt it. I have 6 cats the piss in two litter boxes, but I scoop 2-3 times daily. I really don't think your cat can pee out that much ammonia in the litter box. For it to be burning your cats eyes it would be burning your eyes too. Is your house really that horribly smelly? If your cat is peeing on the rug and all over, after a couple months the ammonia levels could build up enough to burn her eyes.

She has allergies or an eye infection.

I'm guessing it's the urine in the litter box and allergies too. Since you say you don't clean the litter box as often as you should, why don't you invest in 1 of those automatic litter boxes? My best friend has 1 and loves it. She only empties the tray once a day and said it doesn't use as much litter as the convential boxes do.
