Is it really possible to get rid of cat allergies?

We've had the cat for 6 days. My husband sneezes and sniffles by the end of the night but usually only if he touches the cat.
We keep her out of the bedoom. I brush her everyday. We don't have carpet. I'm vacumning every 3rd day. I'm using this allerpet solution on her (supposed to reduce dander). Is there anything else I can do, and is it ever possible for someone whose allergic to have NO allergy symptoms?

It would depend on how strong the alergy to the cat is. And that's hard to tell.

In the meantime, they have kitty wipes and shampoos to help with the problem. I would recommend you pick up both. (there is a foaming shampoo that requires no water to use, I'd start with that stuff)

See if that helps. I'd recommend using the alergen wipes every time your husband and the cat are going to be in the same room.

Also, treat your husband too! See if Claratin will help. (It's a livesaver with my husband)

I am alergic to cats myself, but my own cats never bother me. When I first take a cat in my eyes water and I sneeze, but after a few weeks, those symptoms are gone and I've gotten "used" to the cat.

You've only had the cat for six days. Try the wipes and the foam shampoo. But, there is also a good chance that your husband's body will realize the cat is there to stay and will "adujust"

Best of luck!

Not everyone with allergies is lucky and develops a tolerance for their pet. We found a kitten under our shed 18mos ago. I am very allergic to cats, much more so than your husband. I'm now on a daily regimen of 3 prescription drugs so I can happily live with the cat.

That said, it sounds like you are doing all the right things - allerpet, brushing, and vacuuming. Keeping the cat out of the bedroom is important too as that gives his system a chance to recover overnight from the attack of the allergens during the day.

He could try Claritin or Allegra (they work differently so one may be better for him than the other). Both last for 24hrs and don't cause drowsiness like Benedryl and Zyrtec can. For many people, this will take care of the allergy symptoms. If not, he may want to see an allergist.

Hi Lina,

Sometimes getting rid of the contaminants and dander in the air can help with pet allergies. I personally have allergies and my current air purifier does wonders to help cut down on the allergic problems that I sometimes have. I have used http://www.firstairpurifier.com in the past. Good luck to you!

you get rid of it by not giving a damn about it and love the cat. that's what happend to me. i had my blood checked up for allergies and when it come back with a graph with full of allergens, to my surprise, cats were one of them. i already had my cat by few years already. and now i had her for a decade. at first i was sneezing and stuff, but i couldnt really tell if it was from dust, flower powder or stuff. i just didnt give a damn about it. i regularly breathe my cat hair against my nose coz she smells so good. i do it with my full lung. and it just smells so good after she been sun basking.

If your husband loves her, maybe he would be willing to take the allergy shots? You only have to take them a certain amount of time to build your immunity to the allergy. If he's not willng to go to the doctor and take allergy shots, maybe him taking benedryl tablets for allergies will help him. Good luck!

Eventually, your husband will become immune to his allergy. (the cat)

Does he take any kind of allergy medication? I always keep Benadryl in the cupboard.
