Can you suddenly develop and an allergy to alcohol? |
I have always been a drinker but all the sudden this year it seems I can't hold my liquor... not even a small glass!! Wine that use to taste good, taste bad. Beer makes my stomach hurt, even the good stuff after a 1/4 glass. I do have some digestive problems and it was thought that I have a low tolerance to bacteria or food poisoning. I have been keeping a food diary and it seems every time I get sick, I am normally out- eating out, a wedding or function held by a cater. I also have a drink- glass of wine or beer or something when eating. I am beginning to think it鈥檚 the liquor making me ill as well. Can you be allergic to booze?? I recently had two glass of champagne at home and my stomach was killing me. my allergy hits me after my 4th or 5th rum cocktail.... You are not allergic to alcohol but your mentioned you have digestive problems so you should not drink alcohol. Alchohol is not good for people with stomach problems. Your body is telling you that you cannot drink any more so listen to your body. Also if you have not had your digestive problems checked out by the doc you should do this to be sure it is nothing serious. and i thought i was the only one! I have never been a drinker but i used to drink socially sometimes a couple of beers but most times cocktail drinks and wine until i got a little buzz and then i would stop.. I did that for many years with no problem, never got drunk but i was cool with 2 coktails and a beer and had a good time.... THEN 2 years ago for some odd reason my body started becoming numb whenever i had HALF a glass of wine or coktail drinks.. any type of drinks--- Very weird, all of a sudden im literally unable to move freely, i get such a weird feeling all over my body, bones, i feel stiff... hard to explain but i hate it and i rarely drink now.... I did go out a month ago and had a couple of drinks and thankfully the feeling was not that bad.. Im hoping whatever alleric reaction i had is fading now Maybe you've been drinking too much, give your stomach a break. Stop drinking for a while like 2 weeks or more and stop eating outside. It could be your stomach is irritated and need some time to get better. And do go to the doctor. Never heard of allergy to alcohol but it could be allergy to something in the drink like yeast (in beers). Talk to your doctor to check your stomach first and maybe an allergist. Whilst it is possible to become allergic overnight, even after years of eating, drinking etc. it does not sound like you are allergic. You may have a gastric problem which is made worse by alcohol. I use to be a drinker, but now can't touch the stuff. It just makes me feel sick and very tired. Are you taking Topomax, by any chance? When I was taking Topomax (medicine that can be prescribed for migraine prevention, seizures, or bipolar disorder) my tastes changed drastically. I don't drink wine, but I love beer and suddenly overnight, beer tasted completely different and I could not drink more than a small amount. I developed such an aversion to garlic that I thought I had become allergic to it; I could not handle any garlic in any food for a few months, even the smell made me sick. It sounds like your problem is probably related to your digestive troubles, but it sounds very similar to what I experienced when taking the Topomax, so I thought I would mention it. If you are taking Topomax, the changes will go away when you stop taking it. I stopped taking Topomax because I could not focus at work and had eye pressure and headaches (yeah, I know, it is supposed to prevent headaches, but it didn't for me). I wish I could have kept taking it because the taste changes and queasiness made me lose 20 pounds. Once off the stuff, I gained it all back. |
