Allergies to cats?

i am allergic to cats...is it true the longer i am around them the more chance my body will have to be able to deal with them because it builds up resistance to allergens? and i won't sneeze/ have teary eyes??!?!

nope i never get hives

I get stuffed up and sneeze when I am first around a cat - but it does go away. I was like that for a few weeks with both new cats I got a while ago - and I'm fine now. The only thing that bothers me now is when I pet the cat then accidentally touch my eyes - they get red & really irritated. But I've learned :)
It all depends on your body - for example, I'm the same with rabbits, but it's worse and never goes away!

You can search for "hypoallergenic" cats - I know there are dogs like this ...

Try 'borrowing' a cat - perhaps talk to your local humane society or a friend (although this could be stressful on the cat) ... ask if you can foster a cat/kitten to see if your symptoms go away?

Some people are lucky and build up resistance to their cat's allergens. Unfortunately there are people, like me, who don't. I've had a cat for nearly 2 years and despite all the things I do to minimize the dander in the house I'm still very allergic to her.

It may depend on how allergic you are. You may be one of the lucky ones or you may be OK with drugs like Allegra or Claritin to relieve your symptoms. I'm very allergic - without prescription medications I get asthma attacks, hives and a constantly running nose. Not fun!

It is very possible for some people to become immune to cat dander after a few months of living with a cat. My hubby was one such person. Before we had cats he only had to walk into a room where a cat or dog had been present and he'd start sneezing and his eyes would itch and go red.

He has lived with long haired and short haired cats now for more than 13 years, but he must wash his hands after petting a cat or he can irritate his eyes.

Anti histamine tablets can be a very successful way of dealing with allergies, but some peole have such bad reactions to cats or dogs that they cannot take the risk of sharing a home with them.

its possible, but it depends how serious it is. if you start getting hives, no. if you just sneeze and get teary-eyed like you said, you might be able to.

Your body may or may not become desensitized to cat dander. I know people who are allergic to some cat coats and not others.

You may not be able to get over your alergy
you could end up getting hives depending on how alergic you are
im alergic too and i just allergy products
it reall helps
