Mom's cat has one eye that constantly waters. allergies? infection?

hi all! now, i am studying to be a people doctor, not an animal doctor, but i still feel kind of stupid not knowing what this is. my mom's cat (very long haired) almost always has red-rimmed eyes, and his right eye waters quite a bit, and very often. my mom thinks its allergies but i told her i didnt agree because only one eye is reacting (although i guess that does happen to some). this has been going on for at least a year now. any animal docs, vet techs or animal lovers that have seen this and know what could be causing it?

could be a turned inward eyelid causing eyelash or fur to rub on the eye, entropian ? (think spelling is wrong) will be uncomfortable, be like having grit in the eye constantly.
Some breeds of cat can suffer with this condition especially long haired cats.
