Could red, dry lips be a sign of allergies or a skin condition?

My 20 yr. old daughter recently developed this odd symptom about 3 months ago. Her lips will get red, swollen, & dry...then they will heal. This happens about every few weeks. I have had her discontinue her lipsticks/toothpaste/chapstick, and she seems to think it may be food related--but has no clue which food. Should I bring her to an allergist or to a dermatologist?

I had the exact same problem. I learned that it was due to dehydration, and dry weather. What really helped me, was Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment. It takes the burn away and heals it within hours!

To an Allergist, they will do a skin test and a Asthma test, and if necessary a more sensetive skin test in order to determine what her Allergies are. Then if she has any allergies they can Desensetize After having been diagnosed with severe Allergies, and have been given Benadryl with the instruction if anything goes wrong to call 911 ( he expected Anaphylaxis,) The Benadryl made me severely ill raised my BP and I stayed with my girl, for 3 days until it had worn off. An allergist tested me, and found no Allergies at all, and no asthma. There was a Sinus Infection, and a CT scan of the sinuses was ordered . It is good to know if one has Allergies and what they are. Best of Luck

Sounds like a food allergy. I'd take her to a regular MD and have them refer you from there.

Tell her to keep a mental/or actual journal of all her meals, new foods, soaps, cosmetics or drinks she has until then and see if that helps.

Does her tongue get swollen too?

urticaria is another possibility. Best to let a medical professional diagnose her and help her.

GO TO YOUR FAMILY DR. FISRT HE OR SHE IS GOING TO REFER YOU TO an allergist or to a dermatologist !!!

go to an allergist maybe its food issues. or maybe her lips are chapped cause of the changes in the weather.
