Can a medical professional clearly explain the relationship between immunological disorders and allergies?

The answers above me are correct in full, another way to think of it is that an allergy is a type of immunological disorder. However, it is in most cases a less sever one, just like SARS was a virus, but so is the common cold.

Hope this helps,
m

Allergy is a type of immunological disorder. It's like apple is a type of fruit.

Sometimes you find articles with heading that say "immune dis. and allergies" just like the way people (even professional) say "metabolic dis. and diabetes)

Hope that will help you when you internet surf the information. It's probably easier if you find one with diagram and picture, better yet if it's animation. Coz it's a tough subject and there's missing bits that medicine hasn't answered yet and there's always new discovery in the area.

Having an allergic reaction to things such as peanuts or cat dander is the sign of an immunological disorder. I'm going to use protein allergy as an example because it is such a widespread allergy.

In an allergy, the body's immune system has become sensitized (reactive and "on the lookout for") a material, such as the protein in peanuts. Contact with this protein stimulates production of immunoglobulins, or antibodies, that attack the protein. When these antibodies find and bind to peanut proteins, they recruit basophils and mast cells to enter the area. Basophils and mast cells are two types of white blood cells. Basophils and mast cells usually live in tissues to circulate in the blood, patrolling for foreign materials which might be a sign of infection. These cells, after migrating to the site where the immunoglobulins have bound to the peanut protein, release chemicals such as histamine, kinins, etc. These chemicals produce the physical symptoms we see and association with allergies, such as itchy skin, itchy eyes, coughing, sneezing, and throat swelling. The role that histamine plays also explains why ANTI-histamine drugs, such as benadryl (diphenhydramine) are effective against allergies.

In short, an allergic reaction is a sign of a hyperactive and inappropriately-functioning immune system, and thus is a type of immunological disorder.
