What's the strongest medicine for pet allergies?

I am severely -- *SEVERELY* -- allergic to fur-bearing animals but I'm really dying to get a rabbit. ( Last time I was around a rabbit the symptoms made me miserable for almost a week, I was even worried about my health! )

I've tried Claritin, Benadryl, and Zyrtec and none of them seem to be strong enough. What's another really good medicine (OTC if possible) for my allergies that would make me able to keep a pet?

a fatal dose of rat poison for the pet , this removes the the source of allergen ,

Unfortunately, you've tried the best OTC medications that are available. Zyrtec, followed by Claritin, are the strongest allergy medications available over-the-counter. You may want to consider Claritin-D, which contains Sudafed. The Claritin will work to block leukotrienes, an underlying cause of allergies (leukotrienes cause inflammation), while the Sudafed will work to constrict the blood vessels in the nasal cavity to reduce runny nose, stuffy nose, and other symptoms. However, it sounds like you may have to see a doctor for more powerful allergy medications such as Flonase (fluticasone), Nasonex, Allegra (fexofenadine), or Allegra-D (fexofenadrine/pseudoephedrine). If none of these work, your best bet is to visit an allergist for the shots mentioned above. They will "train" your body's immune system to accept the allergens. The shots may take up to a few years to complete, but it is the best way to cure your allergy without medicine. And, of course, an air purifier will help to filter allergens out of the air; HEPA filters are best. Good luck!

You don't need medication-LOCAL honey will cure your allergy by working naturally with your body to develop immunities to all the air born irritants around you including pet dander. Those meds will dry out your body causing sinus, eye, ear and kidney problems. Dehydration is really serious. The leading cause of death in the elderly is kidney failure due to too much medication over time. Read the warning labels-they also specify stroke as a side effect as well. Like all herbal remedies, it will take a while to become effective but you will also notice that you get less cold and flu symptoms as the local honey takes effect.

I am sure there are some medicines out there for that, but have you also considered an air purifier? I know they help with other allergies and with asthma. Maybe this, along with some medication (or none) will help. Read some details at

Good luck! Pets are great and I hope you find a way to make it work!!

When I was a child (and even on into my young adult years) I was allergic to pet hair and pet dander. I like you wanted a dog and a rabbit. I even had a pet raccoon! I went to the ear nose and throat doctor and got tested. I then took allergy injections for a very LONG time. They did not hurt as they were just given, barely, under the skin of my arm. It was wonderful......totally controlled all my allergy symptoms without making me drowsy. Alll the over the counter meds, like Benadryl, make me terrilby drowsy. That's the only way I know to truly do away with the allergy symptoms entirely. Your regular family physician can give you the injections....all you have to do is have the vials sent to his office. Or, you can have a family friend, who is a nurse, give them to you upon approval. Some people even learn to give them to themselves. Good luck!
