11 mo old with Failure to Thrive-has Milk Protein Allergy, what can he drink to gain weight?

My son has been breastfed for 11 months and is only 16 lbs. He has been diagnosed with Failure To Thrive since the age of 6 mo. but he hates formula and refuses to drink it unless it is mixed with 75% breast milk. I want to change him over to other liquids that will make him gain weight, but he will boycott them because of the taste.

Although he loved Pediasure, it has milk protein (Casein) and gave him a horrible allergic reaction. Are there any high-calorie nutritious things I can give him to drink?

Please help. Thanks!

I would see a nutritionist about this. I would think their should be a high protein soy formula out there. I hope he is not allergic to that. Good luck. Are you feeding him jarred food yet. If he really likes your milk you can puree fresh veggies and add your milk to it to give him more calories. Have you tried that.

I made my son's baby food. All you have to do is steam the veggies and put them in a food processor to puree. You can do a lot at one time and freeze them in ice cube trays or baby jars. You can also use the first years small containers. The breast milk might make him eat more of it. Just mix it in. I hope this helps some.
i would just consult your pediatrician about something like that, they would know what is best. esp. if he has allergic reactions to things, i wouldn't trust what someone on yahoo answers has to say, they may endanger your child.
Talk to your doctor. I know he or she will have several choices for you. Goat's milk is also worth a try. My sister-in-law was very allergic to cow's milk as a baby, and goat's milk worked on her. They sell it at the supermarket. It comes in cans, usually. I don't know if it has casein in it. But talk to your doctor.
Try different formulas. YOu may need to switch to a Rice or Soy formula.
Have you tried Soy Milk, the protein might not be as harsh, plus if you get a flavor your son might drink it willingly.
First, having nursed three children, I would suggest that since he is only 11 months old I would encourage him to continue nursing. Be sure you are taking your vitamins and eating a really healthy diet. You might want to check out the Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine book by Gabriel Cousens. He has a whole section on foods for children. This food raw, live food would be good for your baby because you won't be destroying any on the nutrients in it. i.e. you won't have to get him to eat as much to get calories, minerals, etc in him.

Is he eating anything, or just wanting to nurse? If he is eating you want to be sure that everything he eats is of high nutritional value.

Try the Rainbow book. If your library doesn't have it you can get it from Amazon.
