My 4 year old is fine all day and coughs violently in the evening, Asthma? Allergy? Muscle problem? need Help?

My 4 year old son is only here every other weekend and since the beggining of the year he seems to be sick runny nose or cough every time. This past weekend he was fine all day long ,out running ,playing ,jumping on the trampoline. But in the evening usually arround dinner time when they start to relax and unwind for bed he starts cough violently. I tried cough expectorant's and 3 hours later he stil can't sleep because the coughing wont stop. I even tried benadryl thinking he may have an allergy, thta just seemed to help him sleep a bit better but he still coughed. He has been to the doctor 3 times this year for colds that didn't go away and they haven't seemed to be able to help him. Should I be looking at this from another view...maybe an allergy or even asthma? He has only ever had one bad cold that turned into bronchitis when he was 2. It seems to have happened all at once Since the end of the winter. I'm divorced and getting my ex to accept someting is wrong is difficult!

My three year old has the same problem. the doctor gave us singular and the cough stopped the next day. Singular is used for asthma and alegies. It is considered a brocondialtor.

check with your doctor.

Long-term control of reversible airway obstruction caused by asthma or COPD

鈥? Unlabelled Uses: 鈥? Respiratory and myocardial stimulant in premature infant apnea (apnea of prematurity)

ACTION

鈥? Inhibit phosphodiesterase, producing increased tissue concentrations of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Increased levels of cAMP result in: 鈼? Bronchodilation
鈼? CNS stimulation
鈼? Positive inotropic and chronotropic effects
鈼? Diuresis
鈼? Gastric acid secretion. Aminophylline is a salt of theophylline and releases free theophylline after administration

鈥? Therapeutic Effects: 鈼? Bronchodilation
do you have any animals in the house? sounds like an allergy to me but although asthma can be triggered in the evening, when he has a coughing spell take him in the bathroom and turn shower on hot and sit in there and hang out the steam from the shower will open up bronchial tubes and make it easier to breath.

I think your instinct is right this time. It is time to come at the problem from another angle.

Is he having these problems at his father's house, too? If not, it may be an allergy to something in your house, like a pet, or even the detergent you use on his sheets. Sometimes you can have a tolerance to an allergen, and then when you leave for a week and come back, it starts to affect you.

Asthma is also a possibility, since most attacks do happen at night. Is he having any wheezing or difficulty inhaling or exhaling? (sometimes it is just one or the other)

I would suggest asking his pediatrician for a consult with a pulmonologist. They specialize in lungs, and may be able to diagnose something a GP or pediatrician would miss.

Hope your son feels better soon.
the first thing I would do is take him to a doctor, then I would come back to Yahoo answers and tell everyone about my experience. How many people do You think would be qualified on Y&A to answer your question?
Your home may be to dry for him. Have you tried letting him sleep with a humidifier? It may be as simple as getting some moisture into the air.
A persistent night-time cough is a symptom of asthma but it could also be an allergy. Pet hair and dust mites are the likely culprits - try vacuuming your son's mattress and don't let your pets (if you have them) go into his room. Air his room every morning and wash his bedding on a hot wash. If this doesn't solve things you must go back to the doctor - get a second opinion if necessary.
